Learn Distributive Property with Numerical Expressions

The expressions 3(4 + 2) and 3 · 4 + 3 · 2 are equivalent expressions
because they have the same value, 18. This concept shows how the
Distributive Property combines addition and multiplication.
Multiplying a number by a sum of numbers is the same as doing each
multiplication separately and then adding the products.

Key Concept • Distributive Property

Symbols For any numbers a, b, and c,
a(b + c) = ab + ac and (b + c)a = ba + ca and Think About It!
a(b − c) = ab − ac and (b − c)a = ba – ca. If a(b + c) = ab + ac,
Examples 4(9 + 3) = 4 ∙ 9 + 4 ∙ 3 then what does ab +
ac equal?
4(12) = 36 + 12
48 = 48
a(b + c)
5(8 − 2) = 5 ∙ 8 − 5 ∙ 2
5(6) = 40 − 10
30 = 30
The Symmetric Property of Equality allows the Distributive Property to
also be written in the reverse order ab + ac = a(b + c).

3. What is your solution?

Use your strategy to solve the problem.

What expression represents the amount spent in August?
180(0.46 – 0.24)
What is the total amount spent in August? $39.60

4. How can you know that your solution is reasonable?

Write About It! Write an argument that can be used to defend your
solution.
The total percentage for August is 22%, and the total amount spent is
$180. Multiply 0.22 and 180 to get 39.6. Therefore, the total amount spent
in August is $39.60. This is close to our estimate of $36.

Learn Distributive Property with Algebraic Expressions
The coefficient is the numerical factor of a term.
Like terms are terms with the same variables, with corresponding
variables having the same exponent.
An expression is in simplest form when it is replaced by an equivalent
expression having no like terms or parentheses.
The Distributive Property and the properties of equality can be used to
show that 6x + 2x = 8x. In this expression, 6x and 2x are like terms.

6x + 2x = (6 + 2)x Distributive Property

= 8x Substitution

The expressions 6x + 2x and 8x are called equivalent expressions

because they represent the same value for any value of the variable.
