a. In a democratic process, quality should be ensured over quantity.

could lead a coalition government which is too unstable.

Q4. What are the different kinds of party system?


a. One-party system: Only one-party is allowed to control and run the government. These are
called One-party systems. For e.g. China.

b. Two-party system: Only the two main parties have a serious chance of winning majority of
seats to form government. Such a party system is called Two-party system.
For e.g. USA, UK.

c. Multi-party system: More than two parties have a reasonable chance of coming to power
either on their own strength or in alliance with others. It is called Multi-party system.
For e.g. India.
Q5. Why did India adopt a multi- party system?
India adopted a multi – party system as:
1. It is a large country with social and geographical diversities.
2. It is easy to absorb different social, geographical, and regional diversities in a multi-party
system.

Q6. What is an ‘Alliance’ or ‘Front’?
When several parties in a multi – party system join hands for the purpose of contesting
election and winning power, it is called an ‘Alliance’ or ‘Front’.
For e.g. India has NDA (National Democratic Alliance) and UPA (United Progressive
Alliance) and Left Front.

Q7. Name the founder leader of Bahujan Samaj Party. State the ideology of this party.
Kashi Ram was the leader (President) of the Bahujan Samaj Party.
The party’s ideology is to stand for the cause of securing the interests and welfare of the
Dalits and the oppressed people.

Q8. What is meant by recognised political parties?


a. The Election Commission treats all parties equally and offers some special facilities to large
and established parties.
b. It provides unique symbols to the parties which can only be used by the official candidates
of that party.
c. Parties that get this privilege and some other special facilities are known as recognised by
the Election Commission and are known as the ‘recognised political parties’.

The Election Commission has laid down the following criteria for a party to be known as a
recognised party. They are as follows:

a. A party that secures at least 6% of the total votes in an election to the Legislative Assembly
of a state and wins at least 2 seats is recognised as a State party.

b. A party that secures at least 6% of the total votes in Lok Sabha elections or Assembly
elections in four states and wins at least four seats in the Lok Sabha is recognised as a
National party.
Q10.Define Opposition party. State the significance of this party.
Opposition party is a party that loses the elections and plays the role of opposition to the
party in power.
a. The role of the Opposition party is very important as it voices different views and criticises
the government for its failures or wrong policies.
b. They also mobilise opposition to the government.

Q11.What is the guiding philosophy of Bhartiya Janata Party?


a. To build strong and modern India by drawing inspiration from India’s ancient culture and
values.
b. Cultural nationalism or ‘Hindutva’ in conception of Indian nationhood and politics.

are a necessary condition for a democracy.
