Input Devices
Input Devices
Input devices are hardware components used to provide data and control signals to a computer
system.
Keyboard
Description: A keyboard is the most common input device, consisting of keys for letters,
numbers, and functions. It allows users to input text, commands, and perform various
functions.
The keys are arranged into sections:
• Alphabet keys
• Function or F keys (F1, F2, F3)
• Numeric keys (one set above the alphabet keys and a numeric keypad on the right)
• Arrow keys
• Command keys (insert, delete, home, end, page up/down)
Use: Used for typing documents, entering data, and navigating software.
Mouse
Description: A mouse is a pointing device that detects two-dimensional motion relative to
a surface. It typically has buttons and a scroll wheel for interacting with the computer
interface.
Use: Used for navigating graphical user interfaces (GUIs), selecting objects, and executing
commands.
Webcam
Description: A webcam is a video input device that captures live video and transmits it to
the computer. It can be built-in or connected externally.
Use: Used for video conferencing, live streaming, and capturing video footage.
Trackball
Description: A trackball is an input device similar to a mouse, but with a ball on top that
can be rotated to move the cursor on the screen. It remains stationary while the user rotates
the ball.
Use: Used in specialized work environments like CAD (Computer-Aided Design) or for
users with limited desk space.
Barcode Reader
Description: A barcode reader is an input device that scans and decodes barcodes printed
on products or documents. It typically uses a laser or camera sensor to read the barcode.
Bar Code Reader is a device used for reading bar coded data (data in form of light and dark
lines). Bar coded data is generally used in labelling goods, numbering the books etc. It may
be a hand held scanner or may be embedded in a stationary scanner. Bar Code Reader
scans a bar code image, converts it into an alphanumeric value which is then fed to the
computer to which bar code reader is connected.
Biometric Scanner
Description: Biometric scanners capture and analyze unique physical characteristics of an
individual, such as fingerprints, iris patterns, or facial features, to authenticate identity.
Use: Widely used for security purposes in devices, access control systems, and time
attendance systems.
