That I am a young person at a point in her development who is someone’s daughter, sister, and friend.
Therefore, my lifestyle/way of living revolves around this fact. I am not just a student but a student of
the University of San Carlos which means that I am a witness to the Word and am called to live by
scienta, virtus, and devotio.
Scientia
Practiced through…
Being a student and learning already constitutes scientia. Being serious about pursuing my education
and working hard to absorb knowledge reflects upholding this value well. I also have learned practical
knowledge of things relevant to society today that’ll help me navigate life and its different stages. I learn
to discipline myself in terms of studying and making time for other things, all in the intentions of thriving
academically.
Virtus
Practiced through…
- Having personal values and associating only with things that align with them
- Being considerate and kind to everyone
- Learning how to be emotionally mature
- Handling people and situations with a strong conscience.
I have my own values that I follow as a person, and I like to distance myself with people or situations
that don’t align with my values. This can be applicable in certain circumstances, for example, in politics.
During the presidential campaign period, I realized that sometimes you can somehow tell what
someone’s values are through the kind of people they support (if they aren’t misinformed). There was a
lot of conflict during then because of clashing beliefs, however, it’s for the better so that you surround
yourself with the right kinds of people.
A lot of my values stem from the values that we uphold at home, within the family. The dynamic in
which my parents function on heavily influenced my upbringing and therefore my outlook and attitude
towards life. My home experiences, externally acquired knowledge, as well as my parents’ insights on
certain things helped my adeptness into viewing things subjectively. This, I apply in my daily life and at
school.
Devotio
Practiced through…
We, as youth, are the most capable of using our hands, feet, time, and energy to bless others. In my
experience, community service/donations is a way to bless others typically. Participating in activities that
help those that are less fortunate show’s one’s dedication to promoting good into society. I can do this
through school and other organizations that I join that are dedicated to this cause. My family is heavy on
giving back to the people, therefore I try my best to reflect that upon myself as well. We host Catechism
for young children in the mountain communities at our home with the help of the Brothers of Saint John.
However, devotio should also extend towards the environment, especially with the attention on the
ecological crisis. Doing proper waste disposal and saving energy can already go a long way. But I strive to
go the extra mile and help in reforestation efforts and bringing awareness to ecological issues.
