SSC600 Overview: HW and SW capabilities
Anomaly detection

• SSC600 offers the possibility of detecting unusual

behavior or anomalies in the power distribution network
using a function that constantly monitors the measured
currents and voltages.
• Upon detection of an anomaly the function generates a
disturbance record which is then stored in the device. ADAM
• The disturbance recordings generated by the function are Anomaly
called “anomaly records” and are highly valuable since Records
Fault Prediction
they can be used by smart systems to analyze and provide Insights
highly accurate fault prediction functionality which helps
to better understand the grid behavior and plan
accordingly to avoid energy supply downtime and smartly
manage assets.

Industry survey
Companies say reliability is a top priority
3,215 companies responded, from across various
sectors, including energy, oil and gas, chemicals, rail,
utilities, marine, food and beverage and the metals
sectors.

Results showed:

• 92% said that maintenance has increased their uptime in the last
year
• 38% reporting an improvement of at least a quarter
• 75% of respondents said that reliability positively impacts their
business reputation and financial performance
• Reliability was rated as a top priority when purchasing new
equipment.
• 60% said that they plan to increase their investment in reliability
and maintenance in the next three years
• 90% respondents expressed interest in outcome-based
maintenance agreements. Under these, operators pay service
partners based on achieved outcomes, such as increased uptime
or energy efficiency.
• up to 300’000 USD per hour per critical machines
• up to several millions in pharmaceutical and biogen industry

ABB Digital Substation Products – SSC600/SSC600 SW as AI enabler
SSC600 FP4 – Anomaly detector (Abnormal Events Recorder) function

Triggers the
Disturbances
recorder

ANOGAPC is intended to detect abnormal behavior in distribution network by

monitoring the measured currents and voltages. The intention is that ANOGAPC
would trig the disturbance recorder before the real fault is even detected by any
other protection function. After ANOGAPC has indicated the anomalous events
in the measured data, these recorded occurrences can be used to create more
refined analysis of the electrical network equipment status. The refined analysis
might mean for example artificial intelligence algorithms predicting future fault
conditions.

ABB Digital Substation Products – SSC600/SSC600 SW as AI enabler
Conventional protection vs Centralized/Virtualized Protection Systems contribution to A.I. analytics
Every relay uses a feature or a combination of
features (pattern), and a rule-based classifier. A
feature is typically frequency-domain transformation
of time-domain measurement – current, voltage, Protection Relay Domain
frequency, power, impedance, harmonic content,
high-frequency content, etc.

A pattern is created through the combinatory logic recordings

blocks provided in numerical relays. A classifier
typically has two-classes: Fault & No Fault. no fault fault
Separation plan for the classifier is a threshold value
(for the feature) or a combination of threshold values ANOMALY INTENSITY
(for the pattern). Values and combinations are
determined through system analytics, physics and
physics-based models, and experience. Here, normal
experience is simply a representation of the human condition
potential anomaly zone fault
mind learning from past data. The difference is, the
learning in ML applications happens (or experience is recordings recordings
gained) through algorithms developed and refined by
computer scientists. In applications using large sets
of data, it has been shown that these algorithms High-computing based Centralized and Virtualized Protection
“digest” the data better than a human mind can.

savings/technical losses in kWh and their
percentage fluctuations over the past week, as
well as witness the growth in revenue from saved
kWh and its percentage change. Moreover, stay
1 ahead with insights into predicted faults for the
upcoming week, as well as understanding the
impact of the last disturbance on operations in
kWh. All in all, maximize efficiency, anticipate
issues, and boost savings with this all-inclusive
2 3 functionality.

2. Introducing the Grid Map feature in the GUI,

providing an interactive layout of the grid with
measurement points. Effortlessly maneuver the
map, clicking on points to reveal specific details.
Additionally, access single-line diagrams for a
clear representation of each grid site. This
functionality offers a user-friendly overview,
aiding easy navigation and insightful analysis.
Moreover, you can overview upcoming events by
observing the colors of the substations and lines
with Red (high risk of fault), Yellow (medium risk),
4 Green (low risk).

3. Summary of the most critical locations for

disturbances, including type, severity, time, and
location details.
