Power Electronic Converters (EE305) Date: 21/11/2024
Topic: AC-AC Converters

Q1: Single phase full wave converter has a resistive load of R=15Ω and the RMS input voltage is
Vs=110V, 60Hz. The thyristor switch is on for n=40 cycles and is off for m=60 cycles.
Determine (a) the rms output voltage Vo, (b) the input power factor (PF) and (c) the average and
rms current of thyristor.

Q2: Single phase full wave converter supplies an RL load. The input voltage is Vs=120V at
60Hz. The load is such that L=5mH, and R=5Ω. The delay angles of thyristors T1 and thyristor
T2 are equal, where α=π/3. Determine (a) the conduction angle of thristor T1, (b) the rms output
voltage Vo, (c) the rms thyristor current Ir, (d) the rms output current Io, (e) the average current
of a thyristor Ia, and (f) the input PF.

The single-phase full-wave controller in Figure supplies an RL load. The input rms voltage
is Vs = 120 V, 60 Hz. The load is such that L = 6.5 mH and R = 2.5 _. The delay angles of
thyristors are equal: _1 = _2 = _/2. Determine (a) the conduction angle of thyristor T1, _; (b)
the rms output voltage Vo, (c) the rms thyristor current IR; (d) the rms output current Io; (e) the
average current of a thyristor IA; and (f) the input PF.

Q3: The input voltage to the single phase cyclo converter is 120V, 60Hz. The load resistance is
5Ω and the load inductance is L=40mH. The frequency of the output voltage is 20Hz. If the
converters are operated as semi converter such that 0≤α≤π and delay angle α p=2π/3, determine
(a) rms value of output voltage Vo, (b) rms current of each thyristor IR, and (c) the input PF.
