Assessment Learning 2: Photosynthesis

1. Product-Oriented Assessment: Creating a Photosynthesis Educational Game

- Goal: Create an engaging and educational game that teaches others about the process of
photosynthesis.

- Role: Game Designer

- Audience: Elementary school students (or adjust age group as needed)

- Situation: You are a game designer tasked with creating a fun and informative game to
teach elementary school students about photosynthesis. The game must accurately
reflect the key concepts of photosynthesis, including the roles of sunlight, water, carbon
dioxide, chlorophyll, and the products (glucose and oxygen).

- Product: A fully designed board game, card game, or digital game (with a detailed
explanation of rules and game play). The game should include visually appealing
components and clear instructions.

- Standards & Criteria for Success: The game should:

- Accurately represent the process of photosynthesis.

- Be engaging and fun for the target audience.

- Have clear rules and instructions.

- Be visually appealing and well-designed.

- Include a teacher’s guide explaining the educational objectives and how the game
achieves them.
2. Process-Oriented Assessment: Investigating the Effects of Light Intensity on
Photosynthesis

- Goal: Design and conduct a scientific experiment to investigate the effects of light
intensity on the rate of photosynthesis.

- Role: Scientist

- Audience: Your science teacher and classmates

- Situation: You are a scientist conducting research on the factors affecting the rate of
photosynthesis. Your task is to design and conduct an experiment to determine how light
intensity affects the rate of photosynthesis in a chosen plant.

- Product: A detailed lab report including:

- A clearly stated hypothesis.

- A detailed experimental design (materials, methods, controls).

- Accurate and organized data collection.

- Data analysis and interpretation (graphs, charts).

- A well-supported conclusion that addresses the hypothesis.

- A discussion of potential sources of error and limitations.

- Standards & Criteria for Success: The experiment and report should:

- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of experimental design.

- Include accurate and precise data collection and analysis.

- Present data in a clear and organized manner (graphs, tables).

- Draw a valid conclusion based on the data.

- Demonstrate critical thinking skills in evaluating potential sources of error.

- Follow scientific writing conventions.
