Analysis of Risks and Uncertainty I

Problem Set

1. Use any kind of statistical software to construct a histogram, dotplot, stem-and-leaf

plot, and boxplot of the following data:
{810, 765, 860, 825, 795, 785, 810, 790, 785, 815, 800, 790}

Is the data normally distributed? What steps can be done to improve the normality of
data?

2. A sample of batch chemical process data is listed:

13.3 16 14.9 15.8 14.3 14 15.2 14.2 14.6 14.1
14.5 14.9 13.7 13.7 16.1 14.4 15.2 16.9 15.2 14.4
15.3 13.6 15.2 15.1 13.1 13.7 15.9 14.9 14.1 15.4
15.3 15.3 14.5 13.4 15.5 13.8 16.5 15.2 16.4 16.9
14.3 14.3 15.3 14.1 12.6 15.6 14.8 14.4 15.2 16.8
14.8 15.6 15.6 14.8 14.6 14.5 15.1 15.2 16.6 15.6
15.2 16.1 15.8 14.3 14.3 12.8 17 14.6 14.8 14
14.5 13.9 13.3 14.3 15.4 16.1 14.9 16.4 14.2 15.7

A. Group the data according to these cells

Ranges
[12,13)
[13, 14)
[14, 15)
[15, 16)
[16, 17]

B. Using the grouped data, find:

a. Mean
b. Median
c. coefficient of skewness
d. coefficient of peakedness (kurtosis)

Interpret the meaning of skewness and kurtosis of this dataset.

3. (Two sample t-test) Two catalysts are being analyzed to determine how they affect
the mean yield of a chemical process. Specifically, catalyst 1 is currently in use, but
catalyst 2 is acceptable. Since catalyst 2 is cheaper, it should be adopted, providing
it does not change the process yield. A test is run in the pilot plant and results in the
data shown in the following

Replicat Catalyst 1 Catalyst 2

e
1 91.5 89.19
2 94.18 90.95
3 92.18 90.46
4 95.39 93.21
5 91.79 97.19
6 89.07 97.04
7 94.72 91.07
8 89.21 92.75

Is there any difference between the mean yields? Use 𝛼 = 0.05 and assume equal
variances.

4. (Regression) The following table shows the waterline length (LWL) and the
measured maximum speed of displacement (i.e. non-planing) boats.

LWL 22 30 34 48 65 105 130 240 410 980

Speed 6.1 6.6 6.3 8.1 8.9 13.4 15.4 20 28 42

Plot the speed versus the waterline length and note that the relationship is not linear.

Fluid mechanics suggests that the speed should be proportional to the square root
of the waterline length. Transform the waterline length and plot the data to conform
this model is appropriate.

Fit a regression model to the data and use your model to predict the maximum
speed of a 36ft boat.

Construct a 95% confidence interval for the speed of the 36ft-boat.
