DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN PRE-CALCULUS

I. LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:

1. Define conic section and identify the different types.
2. Illustrate the different types of conic sections: parabola, ellipse, circle, hyperbola, and
degenerate cases.
3. Appreciate the beauty and practical applications of conic sections in real-world scenarios.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

A. Topic: Introduction to Conic Sections and the different types.
B. Learning Competency: Illustrate the different types of conic sections: parabola, ellipse, circle, hyperbola, and
degenerate cases. (STEM_PC11AG-Ia-1)
C. Reference: Pre-Calculus Teaching Guide for Senior High School
D. Materials: Visual Aid, Power Point Presentation, Laptop, Monitor, Chalk
E. Values Integrated: Teamwork and Collaboration

II. PROCEDURE:

TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES STUDENT’S ACTIVITIES

1. Preparation

A. Prayer

“May we all stand up for a prayer…” “In the name of the Father . . . Amen”

B. Greetings

“Good morning class, let me first introduce

myself. I am Rose Ann Julve and I am your teacher “Good morning, Maam Rose!”
for this subject.”

C. Checking of Cleanliness

“Before you take your seats, please arrange

first your chairs properly and pick up any form of The students will arrange their chairs properly
trash under your chairs and put it on the trash bin.” and clean their place before they take their
seats.
D. Checking of Attendance

Is there any absent for

today?” “None Maam.”

“Very Good, that’s good to know!”

E. Motivation

“To Begin with our first lesson in this subject,

let us have first a simple activity called GUESS
ME.”

“I want you to count 1 to 4 and group

yourselves according to your number ”

“The mechanics are easy, I will show you a

picture that will serve as a clue to the four words
with missing letters that you need to answer. The
first group who will get the correct answer will be
given 1 point per word. The group that has the
higher points will be the winner and will be given a
simple token of appreciation. Is everything clear?” “Yes Maam”

“Do the activity without unnecessary noise,

do it in a low voice.”

Simple Activity – GUESS ME.

All students will do the activity by group. They will guess

the words to gain points within 3 minutes.

CONICS ROOM

F. Analysis

1. What can you say about our activity? “It is fun and exciting maam”
2. What does the picture all about?
3. What have you noticed in the picture?

“Group 1?”
“Yes, Very good, Thank you” “it is about circle”
“what more”
“Anyone from Group 2?” “it is about ellipse”
“Yes, Very good, Thank you”
“Any idea from group 3?” “it is about parabola”
“Yes, Very good, Thank you”
“What about from group 4?” “it is about hyperbola”
“Yes, Very Good”

“Okay very good. The activity shows us a common

forms such as circle, ellipse, parabola, hyperbola.
Those words are related and part of our lesson this
morning which is all about Conic Sections and the
different types.”
2 . Presentation

“So, for this morning our lesson is all about

Conic Sections and the different types”

At the end of the lesson, the students will be able

to:
1. Define conic section and identify the different
types.
2. Illustrate the different types of conic sections:
parabola, ellipse, circle, hyperbola, and
degenerate cases.
3. Appreciate the beauty and practical applications
of conic sections in real-world scenarios.

“Do you have any idea what is a Conic Section?”

One of the students will give an idea
“Any idea?”
“Alright, good idea, thank you”

In mathematics, a Conic Section (or just conic) is a curve

“Fe, kindly read the definition” obtained by intersecting a cone (more precisely, a right
circular conical surface) with a plane.

“Thank you Fe”

Some students will read the terms

“Now I want you to familiarize and take note of this
DOUBLE RIGHT CIRCULAR CONE
new mathematical terms that you will encounter in
-it is a surface formed when a straight line intersects a
our discussion.”
vertical line at a fix point and rotates about that fixed
point.
-it has a circular base
- it consist of two cones
VERTEX - fixed point that joins the double right circular
cone
GENERATOR - it is a straight line that rotates about the
fixed point from a vertical line to form the double right
circular cone .
AXIS - the line that remains fixed or the vertical line.
- always perpendicular from the center of the base
to the vertex
NAPPE - lateral surface of a right circular cone
UPPER NAPPE - the nappe above the vertex
LOWER NAPPE - the nappe below the vertex
VERTEX ANGLE- the angle between the axis and the
generator
“Alright, like what we said earlier that when a plane
intersect the double right circular cone we get a two
dimensional curves of different types and that
curves is what we called the CONIC SECTIONS
and depending on the angle made by the plane Selected students will read the definition.
with the vertical axis on the cone, the plane will cut
3 types of Conic Section:
the cone into 3 different ways”
 Ellipse - it is formed when the plane intersects the
Double right circular cone where the angle
between the plane and the axis is greater
than the vertex angle
If - is formed when the cutting plane is slightly
tilted and cuts only one nappe of the cone

-Circle - it is formed when the plane is perpendicular to

the axis.
- is a special type of ellipse, and is sometimes
considered to be a fourth type of conic section.

 Parabola - it is formed when the angle made by

the plane is exactly equal to the vertex
Angle.
-is formed when intersecting plane is
parallel to the generator of the
cone ,but intersects its one nappe only.

 Hyperbola -it is formed when the plane intersects

the double right circular cone at an
angle that is less than the vertex angle.
- it is formed If the cutting plane is
parallel to the axis of the cone.

Degenerate conic is a conic that does not have the usual

properties of a conic.

3 types of degenerate conics:

1. A singular point - it is formed when the plane intersect
exactly at the vertex of the double right circular cone.
2. A line - it is formed when the plane intersect exactly at
the generator of the double right circular cone.
3. Two Intersecting Lines - it is formed when the plane
intersect exactly at the aixs of the double right circular
cone.

3 . Abstraction/Generalization

“Now, let me show you again the picture that I

have shown you in our activity.from what you
have understand in our discussion, who can
give me an idea why it is called a conics room”
Some students will give their idea.

“Yes, very good”

“It is called a conics room because all the objects in

this room have something in common, their forms
or figures are all patterned from conics.”

“Is there any question?” “None teacher”

“So, let’s have a recap”.
“What is a Conic Section?” One student will answer
“Very Good, Thank you”

“What are the types of Conic Sections?” One of the students will answer.

4 . Application

“Now that you have already understand what a

Conic Sections is and the different types let us
have an activity.”

Directions: In your group, i want you to list down 2

examples of a Circle, Ellipse, Parabola and
Hyperbola that we can see in our everyday The students will do the activity.
life.Choose a representative that will present your
answer. I will give you five minutes to list down
those examples of the four types of conic sections.

Are you done? Okay, very good.

5.Evaluation

“You can now go back to your original seat”

“Since you already understand the lesson, please get a 1/4 sheet of paper for a short quiz”

I. Match the description with appropriate Conic Sections.

1. _____ Circle A. it is a straight line that rotates about the fixed point from a vertical line to
form the double right circular cone .
2. _____ Parabola B. it is formed when the plane intersects the double right circular cone at an
angle that is less than the vertex angle.

3. _____ Hyperbola C. this special type of ellipse is formed when the plane is perpendicular to the
axis and is sometimes considered to be a fourth type of conic section.
4. _____ Ellipse

5. _____Generator D. fixed point that joins the double right circular cone.
6. _____Vertex E. it is formed when the angle made by the plane is exactly equal to the vertex
Angle.
F. it is formed when the plane intersects the right circular cone where the angle
between the plane the axis is greater than the vertex angle.
7._____Axis G. the line that remains fixed or the vertical line and always perpendicular from
the center of the base to the vertex.
8._____ Directrix H. it refers to the angle between the axis and the generator.

9. _____Vertex Angle I. it refers to the lateral surface of a right circular cone.

10. _____Double Circular J. it refers to the perimeter of the base.
Right Cone K. it is a surface formed when a straight line intersects a vertical line at a fix
point and rotates about that fixed point.

6. Assignment:
“Research about the properties of a Circle.”
“And so that’s it! we are done with our lesson for today.”
“Great job for today! See you on the next lesson. Thank you and stay safe.”
