2.1 SCALAR PRODUCT AND VECTOR PRODUCT

Scalar Product (Dot Product)

A scalar can be formed by multiplying two vectors.

A‌. B‌=AB cos θ

The scalar product is also called the dot product.

For example, work is the scalar product of force and displacement.
The froce and the displacement are vector.
Work is a scalar. A.B=B.A
Scalar product has commutative property .
Vector product (Cross Product)
The vector product of vector A‌and B‌.

A‌× B‌= C‌
The direction of C‌is perpendicular to
the plane that contains A‌and B‌
The result of this product is a vector quantity.
The vector product between two vectors is denote by a cross (×).
The vector product does not obey the commutative property .

A‌× B‌= - (B‌× A‌)

Right - hand rule:
To use the right -hand rule, first you have to hold up your right hand
so that index finger and middle finger are perpendicular to thumb.

Now roate your hand such that

your index finger point in the
direction of A‌and your middle
finger point in the direction of B‌.

Your thumb will point in the

direction of the cross product.
2.2 TURNING EFFECT OF FORCE

The turning effect of force is a moment.

Forces that create a moment act around a

point called the pivot or fulcrum.

If an object under the action of a net

external force is allowed to rotate about
a pivot, the object will tend to turn in the
direction of the applied force and the
turning effect of the force produced.
The factors: the magnitude of the applied force
the distance between the line of action from the axis of rotation.
The turning effect of force increase by increasing the
perpendicular distance between force and axis.

Examples of the turning effect of force in our daily life are:

Moment of a Force (or) Torque
A measure of a force's tendency to cause a body to rotate.

Torque is a Vector quantity.

τ=r×F
Perpendicular to both the radius from the axis and the force.

The distance from the fulcrum to the point of action of

the force is r and θ is the angle between vectors r and F.
The magnitude of the moment of force or torque is
defined as the product of the magnitude of the force
and the perpendicular distance from the line of action
of the force to the fulcrum also called the moment arm.

τ = F r sin θ = Fd

The SI unit is newton metre (N m).

Never written as joule.
2.3 RELATION BETWEEN TORQUE AND MOMENT OF INERTLA

The relation between them is analogus to newton's second law of

motion for linear motion.
We can expressed as
( τ = 𝐼α )
τ = toque applied to object
𝐼 = moment of inertia of object
α = angular acceleration of object.
The formula of Relation Between Torque and moment of inertia is
one of the formula derivation of Newton's second law.
The moment of inertia is also defined as the sum of the
products obtained by multiplying the mass of each particle
in a given object and the square of it's distance from the axis.

𝐼 = m1r²1 + m2r²2 + m3r²3 + ...m i r²i 𝐼 = ∑mi r²i

Centre of Gravity
The center of gravity location is the average location of all the
weight of an object.

Its affects the stability of objects.

The lower the centre of gravity,
the more stable the object.
The lower the centre of gravity,
the more stable the object.
2.4 EQUILIBRIUM

the upward force exerted by the table on the book must be

equal in magnitude to the force of gravity acting downward
on the book. Such an object is said to be in equilibrium.
An object in equilibrium must satisfy the following two conditions:

The net external force must be zero: ΣF = O

The net external torque must be zero: Στ = 0

For an object to be in equilibrium, it must move through space

at a constant speed and rotate at a constant angular speed.
The principle of Moments
If the object is in equilibrium;
the sum of the clockwise moments=the sum of the anticlockwise moment

(8×1)+(3×4)= 10×2
20Nm = 20Nm
Example-1
A parent and child are at opposite ends of a playground see-saw. The parent weighs
690 N and the child weighs 140 N. The adult sits 0.3 m from the pivot. Calculate the
distance the child must sit from the pivot for the see-saw to be balanced.

w= 140 N F= 690N d 1 =0.3m d2 =?

Total clockwise moment=Total anticlockwise moment
wd2 =Fd1
140×d2 =690×0.3
140×d2 =207
d 2=1.48m
Ans: the distance between the
child and the pivot=1.48m

2.5 CONSERVATION OF ANGULAR MOMENTUM

Angular Momentum

Angular momentum (L) is the rotational

equivalent of linear momentum.

Formula: 𝐿= 𝑟 × p or 𝐿=𝐼𝜔for a rigid body.

Units: kgm²s-¹

Depends On: Position vector (r), linear momentum (𝑝),

moment of inertia (𝐼), and angular velocity (ω).
Law of Conservation of Angular Momentum

Principle: If no external torque acts on a system,

total angular momentum remains constant.
initial final
Formula: 𝐿 =𝐿

Applications: Explains rotational behavior in systems

like planets, spinning skaters, and rotating wheels.
