Creating a Win10 VM on Virtual Box

Note

This document assumes that the computer you are using already has Virtual Box installed
and working. If you do not, please refer to the “Installing Virtual Box” instruction document

Downloading Windows 10 installation media (a Windows 10 ISO file)

1. Log into https://azure.microsoft.com with your @mywhitecliffe.com account.
(e.g.: [email protected])
This will log you into the Azure portal. As a student you are entitled to download and use the
installation media for several different Microsoft Operating Systems
2. The option we need to choose is “Education”

If education is not visible in the list of services, use the search bar to search for “education”
as shown below
3. From Education, select “Software” under “Learning Resources” in the left hand column

4. Now we have a number of Operating System Images from which to choose.

Search for “Windows 10”
5. Choose a Windows 10 DVD ISO to download. We recommend Education (or Pro if available)
You may wish to take note of the license key

6. Download the ISO file (this may take some time)

Installing Windows 10 on a Virtual Box VM from an ISO file
Now that we have the installation media (ISO file), we can install Windows 10. First, we need to
configure a virtual machine for the media to be installed to.

1. Start Virtual Box

2. Choose “New…” from the Machine menu

3. For the Machine choose
Type - Microsoft Windows
Version - Windows 10, 64-bit
Machine Folder – This is the path where the VM files will be stored. You may wish to create
a specific place for all your VMs to be stored
Name - This is what the VM will be called/labelled as in Virtual Box. Choose something you
can identify. We have chosen “Win 10”
Then choose “Next”
We should not require Expert Mode for this machine
4. Choose the amount of memory from the host machine that you will be allowing the VM to
use.
2 GB or 2048 MB is appropriate if possible. This should be no lower than 1 GB 1024 MB.
5. Choose how large you would like the VM hard disk to be. 50GB is recommended

6. Choose the file format for the VM hard disk

7. Choose where the hard disk file will be stored

8. Choose dynamically expanding dis to save host disk space

9. Confirm the choices. You should now see a summary of the machine.

10. To install Windows 10 we need to tell the VM where the installation source is. Right click on
the machine name and choose “Settings…”
11. To mount the Windows 10 ISO in the virtual DVD drive of the VM do the following
From the settings menu:
a. select Storage on the left
b. make sure the disk drive is selected under the SATA controller (shown below as
“Empty”)
c. Click the disk icon next to the Optical Drive type
d. “Choose a disk file…”

12. Select the Windows 10 ISO you downloaded earlier

13. Now that the disk is mounted, “Start” the VM.
If Auto capture is not turned on, click inside the VM window so that your input is captured
by the VM.
REMEMBER: To release the input back to the host OS press Right CTRL
14. The rest of this document will be a brief refresher on installing Windows 10.

15. Note: When building a test VM it should be possible to choose “I don’t have a product key”,
it is always possible to add a product key later.
Not being activated prevents some personalisation options, but for a test machine makes
little difference.
16. Install whatever version you downloaded

17. This is an install, not an upgrade.

You will need to choose the drive to install to. There should be only one blank drive
18. The install should start

19. To create a local only account, choose the option to “Join a Domain Instead”
20. Create a local account

21. Answer some security questions for that local account

22. Done
