The Impact of Generative AI Tools on Student Learning Outcomes in Higher Education

Research Problem

Despite the increasing integration of generative AI tools like ChatGPT in educational settings,

there is limited empirical evidence on their effectiveness in enhancing student learning outcomes.

This study aims to investigate how these tools influence student engagement, comprehension,

and performance in higher education.

Justification

1. The necessity for innovative educational tools to engage students effectively. It discusses

the challenges educators face in adapting to technological advancements, which is

particularly relevant with the rise of generative AI.

2. This research provides a comprehensive review of educational technology in higher

education, underscoring the need for evidence-based practices. It emphasizes the gap in

understanding the real impact of these technologies on learning outcomes.

3. How augmented reality and similar technologies influence learning experiences. It serves

as a foundation for understanding how generative AI might parallel these effects.

4. The role of generative AI in education, specifically the benefits and drawbacks. It

identifies a lack of research on the tangible outcomes of AI tools, which this study seeks

to address.
5. The use of conversational agents in personalized tutoring, demonstrates improved

learning outcomes. However, the need for further research on broader applications of

generative AI tools remains.

Research Questions

1. How do generative AI tools influence student engagement and motivation in higher

education?

2. What is the effect of generative AI tools on student comprehension and academic

performance in various subjects?

Type of Research

This study will utilize a quantitative research method, employing statistical analyses to evaluate

the impact of generative AI tools on student learning outcomes.

Significance

This study is significant because it addresses the gap in existing literature regarding the

effectiveness of generative AI tools in educational settings. Understanding their impact on

student learning outcomes will help educators and policymakers make informed decisions about

integrating these technologies into curricula. Additionally, this research could contribute to the

development of best practices for utilizing AI tools to enhance teaching and learning.
