READING COMPREHENSION

TEXT: WHAT IS POLLUTION?

Pollution is one of the biggest issues that our 21 st century world has to face. It is
closely linked with global warming and the two contribute to climate change.

Pollution is when water, air or land becomes very dirty. There are four main types
of pollution which affect different types of areas in the world. The air and the
atmosphere are affected by air pollution. The factors for air pollution are fumes and
gases: Lorries, motors and machines emit fumes everyday that contain dioxide
carbon (CO2) and other harmful gases to the atmosphere.

Water pollution affects the water and marine life. It is caused by the flow of
industrial litter and other types of dirt into our rivers and seas. As far as land
pollution is concerned, it affects the land and destroys life and the environment. All
the entrants and chemical products that we use in agriculture can turn out to be
nuisances to our soil. There is also noise pollution that can affect our hearing. Of
course this type of pollution is due to the various noises that our ears receive
everyday (from cars, machines, planes, men, etc).

We all contribute to pollution in some way or another. Whether it is with a large

amount or small amount we can still cause major damage to our health and the
environment. This means that our daily activities contribute to all types of pollution
and worsen our own conditions. Man is the first cause of most pollution.

Although we can all stop the increase of pollution, very few people realize that
pollution is very harmful because they do not think of the environment, themselves
and other people. They do not really know how dangerous pollution is and what it can
do. Pollution is an important factor to our lives. It involves our society and all other
animals. Pollution is gradually destroying our planet and killing ourselves too. Like air
pollution, smog and acid rain are killers to all of us. They destroy marine life, our own
health, ground life, etc.
