1. Find the settling velocity of particle in the water in the following conditions: diameter of particle 0.06 mm;
Sp Gravity of particle 2.65, temperature of water 20⁰C, and kinematic viscosity of water at 20⁰C 1.007
centistokes.
2. Find the diameter of the particles with sp gravity of 1.2 removed in a tank having a surface area 250 m2 &
treating 10 ML of water per day. The temperature of water 21⁰C
3. Compute the dimension of continuous flow rectangular tank for a population of 20000 persons with a daily
per capita water allowance of 120 liters. Assume detention period to be 6 hours.
4. 3.785 ML of water per day passes through a sedimentation basin which is 6m wide, 15m long & 3m deep (a)
find the detention time for this basin (b) what is the avg. velocity of the flow (c) if the suspended solids
content of the water averages 40 ppm, what weight of dry solids will be deposited every 24 hours, assuming
75% removed in the basin? (d) Compute the surface overflow rate.
5. A circular sedimentation tank fitted with standard sludge removal equipment is to handle 3.6 ML per day of
water. If the detention period of the tank is 5 hours & the depth of the tank is 3 m, what should be the
diameter of tank?
6. Two settling basins are 26 m in diameter with a 2.1 m side water depth. Single effluent weirs are located on
the peripheries of tank. For a water flow of 26000 m3/day calculate
I. Surface area and volume
II. Overflow rate in m3/d/m2
III. Detention time in hours
IV. Weir loading in m3/d/m
7. Determine the surface area of a settling tank for 0.5 m3/s design flow, using the design overflow rate as 32.5
m3/d/m2. Find the depth of the clarifier for the overflow rate and detention time of 95 minutes. Assume
length to width ratio for settling basin tank between 2:1 & 5:1 and length not to exceed 100m.
Recommended the dimension of the tank.
8. Determine the quantity of alum required to treat 12 ML of water per day if the dosage of alum required is
14 mg/l. also determine the amount of CO2 released per liter of water treated.
9. A water treatment plant is using ferrous sulphate (or copperas) with lime as a coagulant. The ferrous
sulphate is consumed at the rate of 10 mg/l. determines the quantities of ferrous sulphate and lime required
to treat 15 ML of water.
10. A coagulation sedimentation plant clarifies 50 million liters of water every day. The dosage of filter alum
required is 16 mg/l. if the raw water is having an alkalinity equivalent to 5 mg/l of CaCO3 determine the
quantities of filter alum and quick lime (Considering 87% of CaO) required per year for the plant, given the
molecular weights as:

11. Design a mixing basin with baffles of round the end type for treating 50ML of water per day. Determination
period 25 minutes, avg. velocity of flow 0.25 m/s. the basin may be divided into two halves by central
longitudinal wall, and each half may have a clear width of 8 m. mention the number of channels in the basin
& also the overall inside length of the basin.
12. Design a coagulation sedimentation tank to treated 10 ML of water per day. Make suitable assumptions.
13. Calculate the important dimensions of mixing unit, flocculation unit and sedimentation tank unit intended to
treat a design discharge of 13ML per day. Check for important design criteria.
14. Determine the dimensions of a set of rapid sand filters (gravity type) for treating water required for treating
water required for a population of 1000000 with average rate of demand 200 liters per head per day.

15. A filter unit is 4.5 m by 9 m, after filtering 10000 cubic meter per day in 24 hours period, the filter is back
washed at a rate of 10 liters per second per m2 for 15 minutes. Compute the average filtration rate, quantity
and % of treated water used in washing and the rate of wash water flow in each through. Assume 4 troughs.
16. Calculate the quantity of bleaching powder required per year for disinfecting 5 million liters of water per
day. The dose of chlorine has to be 0.3 ppm & the bleaching powder contains 30% of available chlorine.
17. Chlorine usage in the treatment of 20000 cubic meter of water per day is 8 kg/day. The residual chlorine
after 10 minutes contact is 0.2 mg/l. calculate the dosage of chlorine in mg/l and chlorine demand of the
water.
18. The results of chlorine demand test on raw water are given below.

Sketch a “chlorine demand curve”. What is the “break point dosage” and what is the chlorine demand at
dosage of 1.2 mg/l?
19. To obtain 99.70% kill of bacteria, ozone is to be used in water with a residual of 0.6 mg/l. the reaction
constant under these conditions is 3 x 10-2 per second. Calculate the time of contact required.
20. Design a flocculator for a design flow of 350 m3/h and detention time of 30 min. Assume the following
design parameters: (i) G = 40 s-1 ; (ii) speed of the paddle = 4.5 rpm ;(iii) velocity ratio k = 0.25; (iv) μ=1.0087
x 10-3 Ns/m2 ; (v) ρ =998 kg/m3 ; (vi) Ratio of length to width of tank = 2 ; (vii) Area of paddles = 15 % of the
cross-sectional area of basin.
21. Design a rapid mix unit for a design flow of 350 m3/h and detention time of 1 min. Assume the following
design parameters: (i) G = 600 s-1 ; (ii) speed of the paddle = 125 rpm ;(iii) velocity ratio k = 0.25; (iv)
μ=1.0087 x 10-3 Ns/m2 ; (v) ρ =998 kg/m3 ; (vi) Ratio of height to dia. of tank = 1.5 : 1; (vii) Ratio of impeller
dia to tank dia. = 0.4 : 1.
22. Design a rapid sand filter for 6 MLD of water and give the specification of sand and gravel bed.
23. A settling analysis is run on type-I suspension. The column is 180 cm deep, and the data are shown below.
