Children’s Day in Turkey

Would you like the chance to lead your country for a day? The children in
Turkey get one day each year to replace their leaders. This is what happens on
Children’s Day, one of the only holidays in the world that’s all about kids.
The first leader of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal, also known as Ataturk or father of
5 Turks, established the holiday in 1929 to remember the day the Turkish
Assembly1 was founded. He dedicated2 the day to the children. He said,
“Children are the future of our nation and a source3 of joy. … Today’s children
are the future’s adults.” In 1933, Ataturk invited a group of children to his office
as part of the celebrations. After this, it became a custom to make children the
10 country’s leaders for the day. Since then, Turkey has had special celebrations
every year. Children even give speeches4 and discuss children’s issues in the
Assembly.
On Children’s Day, which is celebrated on April 23, you can see Turkish flags
everywhere: on homes and buildings, and especially on T-shirts! The children
15 wear special clothes and paint their faces. There are festivals and concerts
around the country that continue for a week. Turkey is a huge country and its
people come from many different cultures, so there is always a variety of
traditional songs, dances and foods.
The final event for Children’s Day takes place5 in Turkey’s capital, Ankara.
20 Children come from around the world to sing and perform their country’s
traditional dances in a huge competition. Since 1979, groups of children from
150 different countries have taken part in these celebrations.
If you visit Turkey for this special holiday, consider staying with a Turkish
family. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy real Turkish cooking and culture. There’s
25 also great shopping with lots of discounts for the whole week. So mark your
calendar for April 23, and have a Turkish adventure. You are sure to enjoy
yourself!
