Stanza wise
explanation
the trees inside are moving out
into the forest,
the forest that was empty all
these days
where no bird could sit
no insect hide
no sun bury its feet in shadow
the forest that was empty all
these nights
will be full of tress by morning
EXPLANATION-
The trees are decorative and kept
inside a house or shown in a
painting or a picture as a
decorative material. These trees
are not useful for birds or insects
because birds cannot sit on their
branches and insects cannot hide
them.
Stanza 2-
All nights the roots work to
disengage themselves from the
cracks in the veranda floor. The
leaves strain toward the glass
small twigs stiff with exertion
long-cramped boughs shuffling
under the roof like newly
discharged patients
half-dazed, moving
to the clinic doors.
EXPLANATION-
Describes how trees work all night
to escape their confinement and
move towards freedom. The trees
move through cracks in the
veranda floor. The leaves press
against the glass, eventually
breaking through the ceiling.
Twigs stiffen from the continuous
pressure. the trees move slowly
away when moving towards the
clinic door
STANZA 3-
I sit inside, doors open to the
veranda
writing long letters
in which I scarcely mention the
departure of
the forest from the house.
The night is fresh, the whole
moon shines in a sky
still open
the smell of leaves and lichen
still reaches like a voice into the
rooms.
EXPLANATION-
In the third stanza, the poet says
that she is sitting inside her house
and writing long letters in those
letters, she does not mention how
trees are struggling to come out
of her house. She stares at the
fresh night where the full moon
was shining brightly in the sky
STANZA 4-
My head is full of whispers
which tomorrow will be silent.
Listen. The glass is breaking.
The trees are stumbling forward
into the night. Winds rush to meet
them. The
moon is broken like a mirror.
Its pieces flash now in the crown
of the tallest oak.
EXPLANATION-
The poet hears the trees moving
out of the house at night. The
poet can also hear the sound of
