environment in real time. Unlike virtual reality (VR), which creates a totally artificial
environment, AR users experience a real-world environment with generated perceptual
information overlaid on top of it. The primary benefit of AR is that it manages to blend
digital and three-dimensional (3D) components with an individual's perception of the real
world. AR often uses Camera enabled devices like cell phones or glasses: Apple Vision Pro,
Google glass, Meta Quest 3.
- AR can be used for:
+ Retail: Using an app to see furniture or paint will look in your home before buying,
Target app. The Target retail app feature See it in Your Space lets users take a photo
of a space in their home and digitally view an object, such as a picture on the wall or a
chair, to see how it will look there.
+ Navigation: Overlaying a route to the user destination over a live view of a road:
Example :Expand local discovery in Singapore with augmented reality in Google Maps |
Singapore Tourism Board People can go with the direction of Google Maps. However,
it's more than a normal destination. Google Maps allows users to explore new

5
destinations while traveling with a highlight introduction of a place: a deep history…
it aids in the discovery of new places of interest. It enriches travelers through
deepening their understanding of Singapore's rich culture and history. Users can also
interact with attractions to add new dimensions to make it more interesting.
+ Architecture: Helping architecture visualize the building project.
+ Manufacturing: Display information like: model number or repair procedures for
worker to both train and perform maintenance in real time

VIRTUAL REALITY (VR)

I. Brief introduction of technology

- Virtual Reality (VR) is a computer-generated environment with scenes and objects that
appear to be real, making the user feel they are immersed in their surroundings. This
environment is perceived through a device known as a Virtual Reality headset or helmet.
- The main difference between VR and AR is that VR builds the world in which we
immerse ourselves through a specific headset. It is fully immersive and everything we see is
part of an environment artificially constructed through images, sounds, etc. On the other
hand, in augmented reality (AR), our own world becomes the framework within which
objects, images or similar are placed. Everything we see is in a real environment and it may
not be strictly necessary to wear a headset.
II. How this technology applied in E-commerce
a. Virtual stores
- Virtual showrooms enable customers to visit virtual storefront online from the comfort
of their home. Customers are able to browse through clothing racks similarly to being inside a
store. This process will be much more convenient and time-saving. Moreover, they can also
compare the prices of different products before having their final decision.
b. In-store experiences
- VR enables customers to browse and visualize a larger assortment of products than a
physical store
c. Virtual try-before-you-buy
- This technology lets customers try on different products virtually in the fastest way.
These immersive visualizations and interactions can help shoppers really understand what
they’re evaluating and what they want
III. Cost for applying this technology
The cost of virtual reality development depends on a huge number of factors:
- Platform compatibility: Developing a VR app that works across multiple platforms
and devices can increase costs due to the need for additional testing and optimization.
- Complexity of the product: The complexity of the VR app, including its
functionality and the amount of content to be created, can have a significant impact on
the cost.
- Level of interactivity: Application with more interactive features, such as real-time
interactions or advanced AI, require more development time and therefore increase
the cost.
- Quality of content: The cost to develop virtual reality content (high-quality visuals
and audio) can be a time-consuming and expensive process, especially for immersive
experiences that require detailed graphics and 3D models.
- Third-Party Integrations: If a VR app needs to integrate with external systems or
services, such as payment processing or third-party APIs, this can increase
development costs.
- Testing and optimization: Proper testing and optimization of a product is critical to
delivering a smooth and seamless user experience. This process can be time
consuming and add to the overall cost of development.

11
- Development team rate: The location of the development team can also affect costs.
Hiring developers from countries with lower labor costs can be cheaper, but it can
also affect the quality of work and communication.
Developing a basic VR application typically takes 6-8 weeks and costs at least $15,000. On
the other hand, a project of medium complexity, such as an online store integrated with VR
functionality, can take up to 4-6 months and come with a price tag starting at $30,000.
