Interference
1. The intensity of light at the central maxima (O) in Young’s double slit experiment is Io.
If the distance OP equals one-third of fringe width of the pattern, then show that the
intensity at point P would be Io/4.

2. The figure shows the experimental set up of Young’s double slit experiment. The slit S is
not equidistant from S1 and S2 such that SS2 – SS1 = λ/4. Find the path difference (S 2P –
S1P) between the waves emanating from S 1 and S2 superposing at P in order that P
represents (i) a bright fringe (ii) dark fringe.

3. In a Youngs double-slit experiment, the slits are separated by 0.28 mm and the screen is
placed 1.4 m away. The distance between the central bright fringe and the fourth bright
fringe is measured to be 1.2 cm. Determine the wavelength of light used in
the experiment.
4. In Youngs double-slit experiment using monochromatic light of wavelength λ,

the intensity of light at a point on the screen where path difference is λ, is K units.

What is the intensity of light at a point where path difference is λ/3?

5. Light of wavelength 50000A falls on a plane reflecting surface. What are the
wavelength and frequency of the reflected light? For what angle of incidence is
the reflected ray normal to the incident ray?
Diffraction

6..Two wavelengths of sodium light 590 nm and 560 nm are used in turn, to study the
diffraction taking place at a single slit of aperture 2 x 10 -4 m. the distance between the screen
and the slit is 1.5 m. calculate the separation between the positions of the first maxima of the
diffraction pattern obtained in the two cases.

7.. A parallel beam of light of wavelength 600nm is incident normally on a slit of width ‘a’.
if the distance between the slit and the screen is 0.8 m and the distance of the 2 nd order
maximum from the center of the screen is 1.5 mm, calculate the width of the slit.

8. A slit of width d is illuminated by white light. For what value of d is the first minimum for

red light of wavelength 650 nm located at a point P What value of wavelength of light will

the first diffraction maximum fall at P. (Given angle of diffraction- 300)

9. Two slits are made 1 mm apart and the screen is placed 1m away. What should be the
width of each slit to obtain 10 maxima of the double slit pattern within the central maxima
of the single slit pattern?
