Assignment 3
Provide answers for Q4, Q5, and Q6.

Q1 In the four bar mechanism shown in Figure Q1, the input crank OA angle θ2 to be varied from
0 360◦. The crank OA rotates at 10 rad/s in CCW direction and the angular acceleration of the
crank is zero. Perform the following.

(a) Write the loop closure equations and obtain expressions to determine positions for B and
C.

(b) Obtain general expressions for velocities and accelerations for C.

(c) Use a software and obtain trace for B and C for all possible crank angles. (You may use
MATLAB)

(d) Generate velocity and accelerations for C.

Q2 The mechanism shown in Figure Q2 has a linear actuator attached to a fixed point O. For the
sliding velocity of the block A is required to be 𝑣̅𝐴 = 5 𝑚𝑚/𝑠 in the direction shown. Develop
general expressions to determine the required rotational speed and sliding speed of the actuator
for any given angle θ. Hence obtain sliding velocity and rotational speed for the actuator when
𝜃 = 20𝑜 . Then calculate the required sliding acceleration for the actuator when 𝜃 = 20𝑜 .

Q3
For the mechanism shown in Figure Q3, crank OA rotates at constant angular velocity of 80
rev/min in clock wise direction. Write vector loop equation and when 𝜃2 = 135𝑜 determine,

(a) the angular velocity of link 3.

(b) the sliding velocity at the slider.
(c) the Coriolis acceleration at the slider.
(d) the angular acceleration of link 3.

Q4
For the mechanism shown in Figure Q4, determine the velocity and acceleration of point C when
crank makes an angle 𝜃2 = 45𝑜 . The crank OA rotates at constant angular velocity where 𝜃̇2 =
150 rev/min CCW.

Q5
In the mechanism shown in Figure Q5, the angular velocity of link AB is 100 rad/s CCW and the
dimensions of the various links are given. Use loop equation to find the position and velocity of
point D when θ is 90◦.

Figure Q5

Q6
Figure Q6 shows a quick return mechanism in which the crank OA rotates at constant angular
velocity of 100 rad/s CCW.

(a) Perform position analysis to determine the position of slider C.

(b) Obtain general expressions to determine velocity and acceleration of slider C.

(c) Develop a computer program (e.g. using MATLAB) to determine position, velocity and
acceleration for the slider C.

(d) Tabulate the results in 5◦ intervals of θ2 and provides velocity and acceleration plots for
the slider.

Q7
In the mechanism shown Point C is moving to the right with a velocity of 10 cm/s. Use the loop
equation approach to determine the angular velocity of the link BC and determine its value when
φ = 120◦.

Q8
The mechanism shown is a marine steering gear called Rapson’s slide. AB is the tiller, and CD is
the actuating rod. If the velocity of the rod CD is a constant 25 cm/s to the right and θ = 300◦
use the loop equation approach to determine the angular acceleration of the tiller.
