e-Notes 24-25

Grade 6 Subject Science Month June/July

Topic 1 :Ecosystems
Food web: A food chain is a network of links in a food web. Here, the producers are

consumed by the predators-primary and secondary consumers and then the

detritivores and finally by decomposers. When many such individual food

chains occur in an ecosystem, it is known as Food Web.

Components of food web:A food web includes producers (plants), consumers

(herbivores, carnivores, omnivores), and decomposers (algae, fungi) in a

sequence.

Enerygy flow in a food web:

1
Microplastics:

Microplastics are plastic pieces that measure less than five millimetres across. Some

microplastics have formed by breaking away from larger plastics that have

fragmented over time – think debris from tyre wear. Others have been made small

intentionally, for example cosmetic microbeads used in facial scrubs.

Microplastics come from a few different places:

Bigger Plastic Items: When large plastic items like water bottles, bags, or toys

break down into smaller pieces over time.

Products We Use: Some products, like face washes or toothpaste, contain tiny

plastic beads called microbeads. These are washed down the drain and can end up

in our water sources.

Clothing: When we wash clothes made from synthetic fabrics (like polyester), tiny

fibers called microfibers are released and can end up in the water.

2
Working with graphs:

Graphs are visual representations of data collected. Data can also be presented in the
form of a table; however a graphical presentation is easier to understand.
Bar chart:

Line graph:

• Line graphs are used to show changes to a measurement over time. They

show continuous data. A Line Graph to Show the Temperature of the Classroom

Pie charts:

• Every sector of a pie chart is a proportion of the whole. You can explain what

each sector represents using an angle, fraction or percentage.

• Being able to convert between fractions, percentages and angles is a key skill

for answering questions about data presented in a pie chart.

Topic 2 : Force and energy

Force diagram: A force diagram is simply a diagram showing all the forces acting on

an object, the force's direction and its magnitude.

Example: A book resting on a table

4
Explanation:

Gravity (Weight): This force pulls the book toward the Earth. It is always directed

downward.

Normal Force: This force is exerted by the table on the book and is always

perpendicular to the surface. It is directed upward.

Difference between Mass and Weight:

Mass Weight

Mass is the amount of matter in an Weight is the force of gravity acting

object. on an object's mass.

Mass is measured in units like grams (g) Weight is measured in units like

or kilograms (kg). newtons (N).

We use a balance or scale to measure We use a spring scale to measure

mass weight.

Mass does not change no matter where Weight changes depending on where

you are. Whether you're on Earth, the you are. Your weight on the Moon is

Moon, or in space, your mass stays the less than your weight on Earth because

same. the Moon has less gravity.
