1. Define time constant of a circuit. Illustrate and explain does time constant
affect the charging time of the capacitor in series RC circuits connected to
a DC source?
2. Derive the expression for the current in a series RL circuit when
connected to a DC source of voltage V, at time t = 0. Assume zero initial
conditions.
3. In the circuit shown below, the switch was initially at position 1 and the
steady state condition is reached. At t = 0, the switch is changed to
position 2. Determine the expression for the current i(t), for t > 0.

4. A 0.25F capacitor with an initial voltage of 10V is connected across a coil


of 5Ω resistance and 1H inductance, at time t = 0. Determine the
expression for the current through the coil for t > 0.
5. In the circuit given below, the switch K is closed at t = 0.
a) Determine the expression for the voltage across the capacitor, v(t) for t
> 0.
b) Calculate the value of v(t) at t = 1 seconds and its final steady state
value.

6. A series RLC circuit has L = 1H and C = 1F. Determine (i) the value of
the
resistance R so that the circuit becomes critically damped and (ii) the
expression for the current if the capacitor has an initial voltage of 10V
and is discharged through the resistor and inductor.
7. In the circuit shown below, the switch was initially at position 1 and the
steady state condition is reached. At t = 0 , the switch is changed to
position 2. Determine (i) the current through the inductor i(t) , (ii) voltage
across the inductor immediately after the switching operation and (iii)
rate of decay of the current at t = 1 second.

8. A resistor R and a 1F capacitor is connected in series with a 50V DC


supply. Determine the value of the resistance R if the voltage across the
capacitor reaches 50% of its steady state value in 5 seconds.
9. For the circuit shown below, determine the current i(t) and the voltage
v ୡ(t) if the switch K, which was initially at position 1 for a long time, is
changed to position 2 at time t = 0. Use Laplace transform technique.

10.Explain the classification of series RLC circuits based on damping ratio.


11.Obtain the expression for the voltage across a capacitor discharging
through a resistor of resistance R. Assume that the initial voltage of the
capacitor is Vo.
12. a) A series RL circuit with R = 10Ω is connected to a 50V DC supply at
t. Determine the value of the inductance L if the current through the
inductor attains 50% of its steady state value in 1 seconds.
b) The switch K in the circuit given below has been at position 1 for a
long time. At t = 0, the switch is moved to position 2. Determine the
current flowing through the inductor for t ≥ 0.
13. For the circuit shown below, the switch K, initially at position 1 for a long
time, is changed to position 2 at time t = 0. Using Laplace transform technique,
a) Find the circuit current i(t) for t > 0. (8)
b) Obtain the expression for the voltage Vc(t) across the 0.5F capacitor.

14.Determine the current i(t) when the switch is moved from position 1 to
position 2 at t=0. The switch has been in position 1 for a long time to get steady
state values

15. Derive the expression for transient current in RL series circuit excited with
i) DC voltage and ii) AC sinusoidal voltage by applying Laplace transform.
16. Plot the transient response of RLC series circuit for various damping
conditions with DC excitation.
17. A series RL circuit has R = 25 Ω, and L = 5 H. A dc voltage of 100 V is
applied at t = 0. Determine a) the time at which the voltage across resistor and
inductor are equal and b) the current through the inductor at t = 0.5 s.
18. In the circuit shown in figure, steady state is reached, while the switch is in
position 1. At t=0, the switch is moved to position 2. Determine the energy
stored
in the capacitor at t = 0.1 ms.

19. For the circuit shown in figure, the switch was open for a long time. At t = 0,
the switch is closed. Determine the current through the inductor for t > 0. Take
E =10 V, R1 = 1Ω, R2 = 2Ω, L = 1H.

20. In a series RLC circuit with R = 4Ω, L = 1H and C = 0.25F, a unit step
voltage
is applied at t = 0. Find the expression for the current in the circuit at t > 0.
21. The switch in the circuit of Fig.5 is moved from position 1 to position 2 at t
= 0. Determine vc(t).

22. In the network shown in Fig.6 the switch is opened at t = 0. Find i(t)
23. What is the difference between transient analysis and steady state analysis of
electrical network. Explain with suitable example.
24. Find the response i(t) in a series RLC circuit when a step input of V volts is
applied across it at time t = 0. Assume all initial conditions as zero.
25. In the given circuit, capacitor C has an initial voltage vc(0ˉ ) = 10 volts and
at the same instant, current in the inductor is zero. Switch k is closed at time t =
0. Obtain an expression for voltage across the inductor L.
