The Care and Feeding of A Candle

Owen Cayton, Senior Minister [email protected]
Last Wednesday evening, my parents joined us for Wednesday Night Fellowship on their way home from the event formerly known as Ministers Week (This year it was called the Re-mind and Re-new conference and they are trying to open it up to people beyond clergy). My dad received a Kingdom welcome as he walked into the doors of our church. As he walked in he was greeted by Eisley. She ran up to him and hugged him around the legs and said, Oh, I am so glad to see you! I missed you so much! Now, I am not sure that she has ever met my dad or had any sort of memorable contact with himbut that makes it all the more a Kingdom welcome. It was a welcome as though dad was a member of the family, a family much larger than flesh and blood: a family rooted in the love of God who has made us all children and all welcome into the Kingdom family. 1 John 3:1 reflects this well, See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are! Sometimes children see things more clearly than we adults do. As I said a couple weeks ago, maybe when we perceive that the word of the Lord seems rare in our day we should turn to our children and young people. Perhaps we should listen to their musings on things that are not fair or right with the world. Or, in this case, perhaps we should follow Eisleys example. In several places in the New Testament we are invited to greet one another with a holy kiss. A kiss was a first century greeting especially to a member of family. It was incorporated into the church as a sign that Christians are brothers and sisters in the one family of God. We ought to welcome one another as though we are welcoming a member of the family. We ought to embrace one another and say in effect, if not literally, Oh, I am so glad to see you! I missed you so much! Even further, we should welcome those who come into our doors as family, as though we have known them our whole life long as kindred in the family of God! Shalom, Pastor Owen

CHILDREN & YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS

Sondra Ladd, Children/Youth Ministry Director [email protected]

Keri Bruce is our storyteller, and Diana Watkins is our adult assistant. Gage Baker and Matt Arrington are our youth volunteers. Each child should have a CD of all musical tracks, a registration form and a DVD with the choreography. Please make sure your kids listen to the CD and practice the dance with the DVD, if at all possible. This will be very helpful in allowing us time to do everything we want to do. We have lots of fun ideas, and this will help us A LOT. REGISTRATION FORMS ARE DUE THIS WEEK IF YOU HAVE NOT CURRENTLY SUBMITTED YOURS, PLEASE DO SO THIS WEEK.

Watoto Childrens Choir Concert at FCC Feb. 17th

The Watoto Childrens Choir has travelled internationally since 1994 as advocates for the millions of orphaned children in Africa. 21 children and 9 adult sponsors from Uganda will be here to give a performance Feb. 17th at 7pm. Each of the children has suffered the loss of their parents and lives in the Watoto childrens villages. The experience gives the children exposure to other cultures broadening their worldview and gives them confidence to help rise up out of their own situations of despair. We will be housing the children and their sponsors on Friday night. Jodelle Stout is coordinating this. If you are interested in housing them, please let Jodelle know.
