6. (a) 6x – 7 = 2x + 5 = 4x = 12 , so x = 3 [2]

(b) at² - 4a + 2t² - 8 = at² + 2t² - 4a – 8 = t²(a + 2) – 4(a + 2) = (a + 2)(t² - 4) = (a+2)(t+2)(t-2) [2]

(c) 2x² - 2 = 2(x – 1)(x +1) = 2(x – 1) = 2x - 2 [3]

2x² - x – 3 (2x – 3)(x + 1) (2x – 3) 2x - 3

SECTION B (48 Marks)

7. (a)(i) (2x + 3)² = (x – 2)² + (2x – 1)² (2x + 3) (2x + 3)=(x - 2)(x - 2)+(2x - 1)(2x - 1) = x² - 20x - 4 = 0 [3]

(ii) x² - 20x – 4 = 0  a=1, b= -20, c = -4  x = -b ± √b² - 4ac -(-20) ± √(-20) - 4(1)(-4)

2a 2(1)
 20 ± √ 400+16 = 20±√416 = 20 ± 20.39607805  x = 20.19803903  20.2
2 2 2
or x = -0.198039025  -0.2 [5]

The variable x and y are connected by the equation y = 10/x + 2x – 7.

(a) Calculate the value of p, giving your answer correct to 1 decimal place [1]

(b) Using a scale of 4cm to 1 unit on the x-axis and 2cm to 1 unit on the y-axis, draw a horizontal
x-axis to 1≤x≤4 and a vertical y-axis for 0≤y≤6. On your axes, draw the graph of
y = 10/x + 2x – 7 [3]

(c) Showing your method clearly, use your graph to solve the equation 2x + 10/x = 10 [2]

(d) By drawing a suitable tangent, find the gradient of the curve at the point where x = 1.5 [2]
