Department of Computer Science and Business Systems

Academic Year (2024-25) – Odd Semester
III Semester - CB23333 Database Technology
Assignment – 1

Date of Announcement: 14.08.24 Date of Submission: 21.08.24

Objective:

The goal of this assignment is to create an Entity-Relationship (ER) model for a specified
system.

Assignment Details:

1. System Description:
o You are required to design an ER model for a system of your choice (e.g., E-
Commerce Platform, Healthcare System).
o The system should manage various entities, their attributes, and the relationships
between them.
2. Steps to Follow:

a. Requirement Analysis:

o Begin by thoroughly analyzing the system requirements.

o Identify the key entities involved in the system.
o Define the attributes for each entity. Consider the unique characteristics that
describe each entity.

b. Identifying Relationships:

o Determine how these entities are related to each other.

o For each relationship, specify the cardinality (one-to-one, one-to-many, or many-
to-many) and any participation constraints.

c. ER Diagram Creation:

o Create an ER diagram using any diagramming tool of your choice (e.g., Draw.io,
Lucidchart, Microsoft Visio, or even hand-drawn).
o Represent the elements with the standard notations.
o Clearly indicate primary keys for each entity and foreign keys where applicable.
o Include associative entities if necessary to resolve many-to-many relationships.

d. Documentation:

o Provide a brief explanation of each entity and its attributes.

o Describe the relationships between entities, including cardinality and participation
constraints.
o Justify any design decisions, especially if you made any assumptions during the
process.

e. Submission:

o Submit your ER diagram as a PDF or image file.

o Include a written document explaining your ER model, including the rationale
behind your design.
3. Deliverables:
o ER Diagram: A clear, well-labeled ER diagram representing the system.
o Written Document: A detailed explanation of your model, including entities,
attributes, relationships, and any assumptions or special considerations.
4. Evaluation Criteria:
o Completeness: The diagram should include all relevant entities, attributes, and
relationships.
o Accuracy: Correct use of ER modeling notation and clear representation of
relationships and cardinalities.
o Clarity: The diagram and accompanying documentation should be clear and easy
to understand.
o Design Justification: Logical and well-justified design decisions, especially
regarding relationships and keys.
5. Tools and Resources:
o You may use any ER diagram tool to create your model. Examples include
Draw.io, Lucidchart, Microsoft Visio, or even hand-drawn sketches (which must
be scanned and submitted as an image or PDF).
o Refer to your course materials or textbooks for additional guidance on ER
modeling principles.
6. Submission Deadline:
o The assignment is due by 21.8.24.
o Late submissions will not be entertained.
