➢Determine the domain, range, intercepts, zeroes,

and asymptotes of an exponential function.
➢Distinguish the transformations in the graphs of
exponential functions
Properties of Exponential Function for the 05

basic exponential function

x
y = b , b>1 and b≠1
1. The domain is the set of real numbers .
2. The range is the set of positive real numbers.
3. The value of y is directly proportional to x if b is greater than 0
If x > 0, bx >0 If x < 0, bx <1
4. The graph passes through (0,1) y=2x
5. The graph is concave upward facing left
6. The graph is asymptotic to the x-axis ( y = 0)

Study the following graphs and write down your observations
Graph of f(x) = 2x , f(x) = 2x+1 and f(x) = 2x-1

f(x)= 2x
f(x)= 2x+1
f(x)= 2x-1
Graph of f(x) = 2x , f(x) = 2x+1 and f(x) = 2x-1
• Domain : 
• Range : set of positive 
• Trend : Increasing function
f(x)= 2x
• x-intercept : none
• y-intercept :
y = 2x (0,1)
f(x)= 2x+1 f(x)= 2x-1
y = 2x+1 (0,2)
y = 2x-1 (0, ½ )
Asymptotic to x –axis ( y = 0)

• The graph of f(x) = 2x+1 shifts the graph of

f(x) = 2x one unit to the left.

• The graph of f(x) = 2x-1 shifts the graph of

f(x) = 2x one unit to the right.
Study the following graphs and write down your observations
1 x

• y-intercept : f(x)= ½(2x)
y = 2x (0,1)
y = 4(2x) (0,4)
y = ½(2x) (0,1/2)
• Asymptotic to the x-axis

• The graph of f(x) = 4(2x ) stretches the graph of

y = 2x (0,1)
y = 2-x (0,1)
y = -2x (0,-1)
• Asymptotic to the x-axis

The graphs of exponential functions can be
translated vertically or horizontally,
reflected, stretched or shrunk.
Translation
• A translation of a graph means a shift or movement in its
location without changing the shape of the graph

Reflection
•A reflection of a graph is a kind of transformation that makes the new
figure a mirror image or the original figure.

• Reflection in the x-axis : f(x) = -f(x)

• Reflection in the y-axis : f(x) = f(-x)
