Introduction

In today's rapidly evolving world, the intersection of business and environmental sustainability
has become a paramount concern. As the detrimental effects of climate change become
increasingly evident, there is a growing realization that traditional business models must adapt
to a more eco-conscious paradigm. This shift has given rise to the concept of green business,
where companies are not only profit-driven but also environmentally responsible. Within this
transformative landscape, the human-centric approach emerges as a guiding principle, placing
people and their well-being at the heart of green business initiatives.

At its core, the human-centric approach recognizes that individuals, communities, and societies
are integral stakeholders in the pursuit of sustainable business practices. It emphasizes the
importance of understanding and meeting the needs of people, both within and outside the
organization. This approach goes beyond profit margins and focuses on creating positive social
impacts, fostering inclusivity, and enhancing the overall quality of life. By prioritizing human
well-being, green businesses can establish meaningful connections with their employees,
customers, and communities, fostering a sense of shared purpose and collective responsibility.

In the realm of green business, a human-centric approach translates into initiatives that not only
reduce environmental impact but also empower individuals and communities. Whether through
the creation of green jobs, education and awareness programs, or community engagement
efforts, businesses can contribute significantly to building a sustainable future. By embracing
this approach, companies can not only mitigate their ecological footprint but also inspire
positive change, driving a collaborative effort towards a greener, more equitable world.

1
Objective
A human-centric approach in the context of green business objectives refers to putting people
at the centre of environmental sustainability efforts. It means considering the needs, well-being,
and perspectives of individuals and communities while designing and implementing green
business strategies. Here's how a human-centric approach can be applied to achieve green
business objectives:

1. Community Engagement:
Local Partnerships: Collaborate with local communities and NGOs to address
environmental challenges collectively.
Employment Opportunities: Create jobs within the community through green
initiatives, fostering economic sustainability.

2. Accessibility and Affordability:

Affordable Green Products: Ensure that eco-friendly products and services are
accessible and affordable to a wide range of customers, promoting inclusivity.
Green Technology: Invest in research to develop affordable green technologies that
can be adopted widely, benefiting both businesses and consumers.

3. Health and Well-being:

Safe Working Conditions: Ensure that employees working in green business sectors
have safe and healthy working environments.
Eco-friendly Products: Produce goods that promote health and well-being, avoiding
harmful chemicals and substances.

4. Social Innovation:
Support for Start-ups: Provide support and funding for startups and entrepreneurs
focusing on innovative green solutions.
Crowdsourcing Ideas: Engage the community to generate innovative ideas for
sustainable practices through contests and initiatives.

METHODOLOGY
1
METHODOLOGY

The methodology for this research aims to investigate and understand the implementation and
impact of a human-centric approach in the field of green business. It seeks to uncover how
businesses prioritize and engage with human well-being, sustainability, and environmental
responsibility.

Data collection

1. Primary source
A primary source of data is an original, first hand, or direct piece of information or evidence
that is created or produced at the time of an event or by individuals who have direct knowledge
or personal experience of the subject matter.
The primary source being used for this project is a questionnaire.

A. Questionnaire
- is a structured set of written or printed questions designed to gather information, opinions, or
data from individuals or groups of people
Our questionnaire is divided in 4 sections
1. General Information
(Business information such as business name, type, number of employees and annual
revenue)
2. Sustainability practices
(Sustainability practices and policies implemented by the firm and following of corporate
social responsibility)
3. Human-Centric Approach
(Promoting a culture of sustainability among employees)
4. Green Product/Service Offerings
Offering green product/services
These questions seek to gather information about a business's sustainability efforts, employee
engagement, green products/services, and partnerships with suppliers and partners. The
answers will help assess and understand the company's commitment to environmental
responsibility and sustainability.

2. Secondary Source
A secondary source of data is information that is derived or collected from existing primary
sources or other previously published materials.

1
The secondary sources used for this project include books like
• Natural Capitalism
The book proposes a new form of capitalism, referred to as "natural capitalism," which
emphasizes the importance of investing in natural resources, energy efficiency, and
environmental sustainability. The book also discusses the importance of redesigning
products and processes to minimize environmental impact and promote long-term
sustainability.
It outlines strategies and examples of how businesses can operate in ways that are both
environmentally friendly and economically beneficial. The authors advocate for a shift
from a linear, wasteful industrial system to a more circular and sustainable economy.

• The Blue Economy

The term "Blue Economy" refers to the sustainable use of ocean resources to promote
economic growth, improve livelihoods, and preserve the health of marine ecosystems.
In the book, Gunter Pauli presents various case studies and examples of businesses and
initiatives that utilize the principles of the Blue Economy.

• Green Giants
Through detailed examples and analyses, the book highlights how these companies
have embraced sustainable practices, reduced their environmental impact, and at the
same time, increased their profitability. The term "green giants" refers to these
companies' significant impact on both environmental sustainability and the business
world, demonstrating that being environmentally responsible can go together with
financial success.

Participants
The study will target a diverse sample of business organizations representing various sectors
that have adopted or expressed an interest in green business practices. Participants will include
business leaders, employees, and stakeholders who can provide insights into the human-centric
aspects of their sustainability initiatives.
The survey we conducted through google forms included participants like
Soft Green Agro Pvt. Ltd.
Invent Consultancy Services
GREENTECH
Pankaj Ice-cream Parlour

Data analysis

1
1. Analysing data from a questionnaire involves a systematic process of summarizing,
organizing, and interpreting the responses to extract meaningful insights of diverse
business owners regarding concepts of green business.
2. Data analysis through books, publication and journals include selecting relevant
sources, summarising key information, identifying patterns and trends and comparing
data.

1
OBSERVATION and ANALYSIS

One out of the four businesses have a well-defined strategy focusing on energy efficiency and
sustainability. They prioritize transparency by conducting environmental audits, emphasizing
the use of renewable energy, and regularly evaluating their environmental impact. They also
prioritize a human-centric approach, promoting eco-friendly practices and engaging employees
in sustainability efforts through incentives, training, and awareness campaigns.
This business also ensures a health-conscious workspace design, offers flexible work options,
wellness programs, sustainable transportation, and nutritious catering. They provide diverse
environmental sustainability training, including workshops and certifications, and involve the
business in decision-making for green initiatives. They offer both green products and services,
ensuring their quality through rigorous environmental criteria, certifications, and customer
feedback mechanisms.
Moreover, they enforce sustainable practices among suppliers through selection criteria,
regular audits, and joint initiatives, and hold multiple certifications, showcasing their
compliance with environmental regulations and dedication to sustainability. However, only one
business prioritizes collaboration with suppliers who share similar green business
commitments.
Whereas on the other hand the other companies have limited adoption of green initiatives
among small businesses in India can be attributed to factors such as budget constraints, a lack
of awareness about the benefits of sustainability, infrastructural challenges, complex
regulations, traditional mindsets, and market competition. To promote eco-friendly practices,
there is a need for increased awareness, financial support, simplified regulations, improved
infrastructure, and the promotion of a sustainable culture through education and training
programs.

1
Conclusion

In summary, adopting a human-centric approach can help businesses implement more ethical
and sustainable practices. Putting human needs and wellbeing at the forefront encourages
companies to consider how their operations and products impact communities, employees, and
consumers. This involves taking a more holistic view beyond just profits.

Some keyways a human-centric focus can facilitate green business practices is by promoting
corporate social responsibility, environmental sustainability, and conscious consumerism.
Companies can integrate CSR policies to uplift suppliers, local economies, and marginalized
groups affected by their business. They can also minimize ecological harm through greener
technologies and materials, energy efficiency, and waste reduction. Additionally, appealing to
and educating green consumers can drive demand for eco-friendly and ethical products.

Through this project we conclude that there is still lack of proper awareness among firms to
move towards green business. People aren't ready to sacrifice their profit. But there is slow and
steady growth towards the human centric approach in green business

1
Solutions

A human-centric approach in the context of green business involves prioritizing people's well-
being and quality of life while also considering the environmental impact of business activities.
Here are some solutions to promote a human-centric approach in green business concerns:

1. Employee Well-being and Development:

- Invest in employee training and development to enhance their skills in sustainability and
environmental practices.
- Promote work-life balance, health, and safety to ensure employees are physically and
mentally well.

2. Community Engagement:
- Collaborate with local communities to address their needs and concerns related to
environmental sustainability.
- Support community initiatives that promote green practices and provide education on
environmental issues.

3. Fair Wages and Benefits:

- Ensure that employees are paid fair wages and provided with benefits that support their
well-being, such as healthcare and retirement plans.

4. Ethical Sourcing and Supply Chain:

- Source materials and products from suppliers who follow sustainable and ethical practices.
- Collaborate with suppliers to reduce the environmental impact of the supply chain.

1
LEARNING OUTCOME

Here are a few key things that can be learned from a human-centric approach in green business
projects:

- Understanding user needs and preferences is crucial. Getting input from end users early in the
design process can help ensure the sustainability solutions developed will be adopted and have
maximum impact. Surveys, focus groups, and ethnographic research can provide critical
insights.

- Solutions should be co-created with stakeholders. Collaborating with customers, employees,

and other stakeholders to develop green initiatives can build buy-in and ownership. Their
expertise and diverse perspectives can strengthen the outcomes.

- Behaviour change is complex. Providing information and education is usually not enough to
change habits. Human-centred design looks deeper at motivations and barriers to sustainable
behaviours and designs nudges and incentives accordingly.

- Empathy and emotion matter. Sustainability messaging that connects with people at an
emotional level and shows authentic care for their priorities is more compelling than facts and
statistics alone.
