atoms whose centres are intersected by the direction vector:
a) [100]
b) [110]
c) [111]

z (1, 1, 1)

y
(0, 0, 0) (0, 0, 0)
x (0, 0, 0)

(1, 0, 0) (1, 1, 0)

Question 2
Determine the Miller Indices of a plane which is parallel to x-axis and cuts intercepts of 3
and 1/2, respectively along y and z axes.
Intercepts = (∞, 3, 1/2)
Reciprocals = (0, 1/3, 2)
Miller indices = (016)

Question 3
Determine the Miller Indices of a plane which is parallel to x-axis and cuts intercepts of 2
and 1/2, respectively along y and z axes.
Intercepts = (∞, 2, 1/2)
Reciprocals = (0, 1/2, 2)
Miller indices = (014)

Question 4
Calculate a value for the density of FCC platinum in grams per cubic centimeter from its
lattice constant a of 0.39239 nm and its atomic mass of 195.09 g/mol.
195.09
mass of atoms per unit cell 4( 23 )
𝜌= = 6.022 × 10 = 21.45 g/cm3
volume of unit cell (0.39239 × 10 −9 ) 3

Question 5
Calculate the planar atomic density in atoms per square millimeter for the (0001) plane in
HCP beryllium (Figure 1), which has a lattice constant a = 0.22856 nm and a c constant of
0.35832 nm.
Area of (0001) plane
1 √3

2 2
= 1.357 × 10−19 m2

3
PD0001 = = 2.21 × 1019 atoms/m2 = 2.21 × 1013 atoms/mm2
1.357 × 10−19

Question 6
Calculate the planar atomic density in atoms per square millimetre for the following crystal
planes (Figure 2) in BCC chromium at (100) plane with lattice constant of 0.28846 nm.
1
PD100 = (0.28846×10−9 )2 = 1.202 × 1019 atoms/m2 = 1.202 × 1013 atoms/mm2

millimetre square. Given: Lattice constant is 0.287 nm
2 2
PD110 = = = 1.72 × 1019 atoms/𝑚2 = 1.72 × 1013 atoms/mm2

Question 8
Determine the diffraction angle 2θ through which an X-ray of wavelength 0.1542 nm be
reflected from the cube face of a rock salt crystal (a = 0.404 nm) at 2nd order reflection for
(111) plane.
0.404 nm
𝑑111 = = 0.233 nm
√12 + 12 + 12
𝑛𝜆 2(0.1542 nm)
sin 𝜃 = = = 0.6618
2𝑑111 2(0.233 nm)
2𝜃 = 2(41.437∘ ) = 82.9∘

Question 9
An X-ray diffractometer recorder chart for an element that has either the BCC or the FCC
crystal structure showed diffraction peaks at the following 2θ angles: 36.191°, 51.974°,
64.982° and 76.663°. The wavelength of the incoming radiation was 0.15405 nm.
a) Determine the crystal structure of the element.
b) Determine the lattice constant of the element.
a) Compute the sin2θ for the first 2 diffraction angles:

2θ θ sin θ sin2θ
36.191 18.096 0.31060 0.09647
51.974 25.987 0.43817 0.19199

0.09647

0.19199

b) The lattice constant is

0.15405 nm 12 + 12 + 02
𝑎= √ = 0.3507 nm
2 0.09647
