Question 1
Define the meaning of “unit cell.”
Unit cell is the smallest repeating unit of a crystal structure that retains overall symmetry and
properties. Entire crystal can be recreated by duplicating and translating unit cells.
Question 2
With the aid of diagram, determine the atomic packing factor of BCC structure.
Refer to the lecture notes for Topic 2 (Part 3), pages 18-19.
Question 3
Tungsten at 20°C is BCC and has an atomic radius of 0.137 nm.
a) Calculate a value for its lattice constant a in nanometres.
b) Calculate the volume of the unit cell.
4𝑅 4(0.137 nm)
a) 𝑎 = = = 0.316 nm
√3 √3
b) 𝑉 = 𝑎 = 0.0316 nm3

Question 4
Molybdenum at 20°C is BCC structure and has an atomic radius of 0.140 nm. Calculate the
lattice constant a in nanometres for the unit cell of Molybdenum.
4𝑅 4(0.140)
𝑎= = = 0.323 nm
√3 √3
Question 5
Face-centred cubic (FCC):
a) FCC unit cell of Neon and has an atomic radius of 0.160 nm. Calculate a value for its
lattice constant a in nanometres.
b) Verify that the atomic packing factor for the FCC structure is 0.74.
4𝑅 4(0.160)
a) 𝑎 = = = 0.453 nm
√2 √2
b) Refer to the lecture notes for Topic 2 (Part 3), pages 23-24.
Question 6
Hexagonal close-packed structure (HCP):
a) Calculate the number of atoms per unit cell of a hexagonal closed packed crystal
structure.
b) Determine the coordination number of an HCP crystal structure.
c) With the aid of diagram, determine the atomic packing factor of HCP crystal structure.
Given that the height of the HCP unit cell is 1.633a and lattice parameter a = 2R
a) 12 × 1/6 + 2 × 1/2 + 3 = 6 atoms
b) 12
c) Refer to the lecture notes for Topic 2 (Part 3), pages 30-31.
