Worksheet 5.4
Planning lamps and switches for a flat
Imagine you are planning the electric lighting for a small flat.
There is a lounge with a kitchen area, a bedroom and a bathroom.

You need 12 V to supply the electricity.

The lounge, the kitchen area, the bedroom and the bathroom each need a lamp.
Each lamp needs its own switch.
1 List the components you need.

CAMBRIDGE PRIMARY SCIENCE 6 UNIT 5: FORCES AND ELECTRICITY

Help sheet
1 List the components you need.
• How many lamps do you need?
• How many switches do you need?
• How many 3V batteries would you need? How many 1.5 V cells would you need?
• What do you need to join all the components together?
2 Why does each lamp need its own switch?
Think about this – if you are going to bed, which room would you prefer to be in when you switch
the bedroom light off?

3 Will you use a series circuit or a parallel circuit? Explain why.

Remember that a series circuit is a circuit where the electric current only has one pathway.
A parallel circuit is a circuit where there is more than one pathway and each pathway
receives the full circuit voltage.
If you switch on one lamp do you want all the lamps to come on?
And when you switch off a lamp do you want all the lamps to switch off?

4 Draw a circuit diagram to show your plan.

Now that you have decided which components you need and whether it is a series
or a parallel circuit, you should be able to draw your circuit diagram.

Stretch question
Think about where you would put the lamps and the switches in the flat in the
most convenient places.
Draw the symbols for the lights and switches on the plan of the flat below.
Draw red lines to show how you would connect the lamps and switches to the
battery using the type of circuit you used in answers 3 and 4.
