CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH DESIGN

The aim of this study was to examine transportation problems and their
effects on student school attendance. For this purpose Triangulation is used
in this study. The researcher collected both qualitative and quantitative data
at the same time and on the same event through questionnaire and
interview methods (Omari, 2011). The quantitative method involves
inferential approach or survey research design in which questions or
observation is used (Kothari, 2004; Omari). It involves application of
mathematical and statistical techniques which are very useful in research
since researcher use numerous tables and charts to analyze the collected
data.

The quantitative method Is helped to analyze raw data which is collected

through questionnaire and subjected to similar statistical analysis in order to
provide solid evidences regarding student transportation problems and their
effects on student school attendance. The Cross-sectional survey assists to
collect intended information from different kind of people at once (Enon,
1995; Kothari). The questionnaire and interview were used to determine if
there is relationship between student attendance and

Transportation problems.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The respondents of this study are the Third year College Bachelor of
Elementary Education night shift in Daraga Community College of the
Academic school year 2024-2025. A total of 50 students respondents target
for our survey.

SAMPLING PROCEDURES
These are various steps to be undertaken in the process of gathering the
data from the respondents that are all deemed necessary for the study,
which are as follows;

The researchers have worked on chapters one to three with the help of
the thesis adviser’s guidance on how to present the study. Then the
researchers prepared a structured interview guide and a structured
questionnaire that shall be used as research instruments to gather the first-
hand information on the respondents regarding the questions based on the
statement of the problem.

Further, the researchers made a communication letter to their adviser

upon seeking approval for the start of the data gathering, conducting
surveys and interviews among the respondents. Afterwards, once approved,
the researchers shall be conducting a random purposive sampling over the
respondents.

The researchers sent a letter to the respondents. In this letter introduced the
researchers and explained the purpose of the research, and kindly asked for
their participation, the researchers made it clear that their feedback would
be kept confidential and used exclusively for the sake of the research. After
collected the answered survey questionnaires, the researchers began the
process of evaluating, discussing, and the research. After collected the
answered survey questionnaires, the researchers began the process of
evaluating, discussing, and analyzing the data, it involved interpreting the
data.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The study employed a self-designed instrument, where the researchers

created the survey questionnaires themselves. A structured questionnaire
was the main instrument the researchers utilized in the study to collect the
data required. The questionnaire was composed of five (5) parts. Part I, the
profile of the students of Daraga Community College. Part 2 are the students
transportation challenges. Part 3 are the Impact on students Attendance. Part
4 are the impact on Academic performance. Part 5 are the proposed
solutions and recommendations.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

The following statistical tools will be used to analyze, and interpret the
data to solve the problems presented; the researchers will be used
Frequency and Percentage for the computation and tabulation of profile of
the respondents. The statistical methods employed were frequency count
and ranking.
Frequency and Percentage. It is used as statistical tool in computing
the responses which correspond to the total number of respondents. The
formula used in the application of this technique is:

P= (f/n) x 100

Where:

P= Percentage

F= frequency

N= number of cases or Total sample

Weighted mean is a type of average where some values contribute more

than others, This statistical formula will be used to compute the data on the
level of satisfaction, problems encountered and recommendations.

It will solved by the formula:

Where:

WM Weighted Mean

F Frequency

∑ Summation

X Weighted given to the category

N Total number of cases/respondents

Likert scale is a type of survey question that offers a range of answer

options – from one extreme attitude to another, like Excellent to Poor. The
adjectival interpretation of a 4 likert scale might look something like this:
