Infinitive with 'to'

1. After certain verbs (e.g., want, plan, decide, try):

Example: He wants to hold the lizard.

2. After adjectives (e.g., excited, happy, difficult):

Example: She’s excited to try it.

3. To show purpose:

Example: She went to the store to buy it.

2. Infinitive without 'to'

Infinitives are used without 'to' (bare infinitives) in the following cases:

1. After modal verbs (e.g., can, will, must):

Example: She can hold it.

2. After causative verbs (e.g., make, let):

Example: Let her hold it.

- After verbs of perception (e.g., see, watch, hear):

Example: We saw her hold it.

• I can’t hold one!

("Hold" follows the modal verb "can," which never takes "to.")

• Make him try it.

("Try" follows "make," a causative verb, which is followed by the bare infinitive.)
• We’ll watch her do it.
("Do" is used without "to" after the verb of perception "watch.")

• OK. I’ll let her buy it.

("Buy" follows "let," another causative verb, which is always followed by a bare infinitive.)

• I’ll even help her pay for it.

("Pay" is a bare infinitive following "help," which can be used with or without "to.")
