ACTIVITY 1:

Direction: below are images of usual elements of a good design. In the space provided, briefly
describe your understanding of such element why it is significant and symbolic as applied in arts.
And after sharing your thoughts on its significance, write your insight why lines, colors, and shapes
are important building block of arts certainly on graphic arts?

SHAPE: A shape is an element that is defined by a closed contour or outline. Shape can be
geometric (such as circles, squares, or triangles) or organic (such as blobs, splashes, or curves).
Shape can also create contrast, harmony, balance, and emphasis depending on how they are
arranged and combined. It can also suggest meanings and associations based on their forms. For
example, circles can represent unity and completeness, while triangle can symbolize strength and
directions.

SHAPE

LINE: A line is a basic element that can be used to create shapes, forms, patterns, textures, and
movements. Lines can also convey emotions and moods depending on their direction, thickness,
and curvature. For example, horizontal lines can suggest stability and calmness, while diagonal
lines can imply dynamism and tension. Lines can also create contrast and harmony with other
element such as colors and shapes.

LINE

COLOR: color is an element that can affect the mood, atmosphere, and message of a design.
Colors can also create contrast, harmony, balance, and emphasis depending on how they are used.
Colors can be categorized into properties: hue, value, and saturation. Hue is the name of the color,
such as red, blue or green. Value is the brightness or darkness of the color such as: light blue or
dark blue. Saturation is the intensity or purity of the color, such as bright red, or dull red.

COLOR

MY INSIGTS:
My insight on why lines, colors, and shapes are important building blocks of arts, especially
graphic arts, is that they are the basic elements that can create various effects and expression in a
design. Lines, colors, and shapes can communicate different meaning and messages depending on
how they are used and combined. They can also create visual interest and appeal by using
contrast, harmony, balance, and emphasis. Lines, colors, shapes can also reflect the style and
personality of the artist or the designer. They are the essential tolls that can transform an idea into
a visual representation.
ACTIVITY 2:
Direction: Below are photos of popular logos in the industry. Research the meaning and history of
each logo and write your findings in the spaces provided. At the end of the activity, write your
reflection or takeaways how these logos moved you as a future graphic artist or designer.

LOGO 1:

Findings: Mitsubishi
Mitsubishi is a Japanese word that means “three diamonds” or “three water chestnuts”.
The name and the logo of the company are derived from the family crests of its founder, Yataro
Iwasaki, and his first employer, the Tosa clan. The three diamonds symbolize the three core values
of the company: corporate responsibility, integrity, and global understanding. The logo also
represents the wing of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, and suggests movement and speed. The
logo has been relatively unchanged since its creation in 1870, except for some minor modifications
in shape and color. The logo is also red, which is a lucky and powerful color in Japanese culture, as
it can ward off evil spirits and signify blood and life force. The Mitsubishi logo is one of the most
recognizable and iconic logos in the world, as it reflects the history, vision, and identity of the
company.

LOGO 2:

Findings: APPLE (Technology Company)

The Apple logo is a stylized apple with a bite taken out of it. It represents the company's name,
which was inspired by Steve Jobs' fruitarian diet and his visit to an apple orchard. The logo also
suggests innovation, creativity, and simplicity.
The first Apple logo, designed by Ronald Wayne in 1976, was a detailed illustration of Isaac
Newton sitting under an apple tree. It was based on the legend of how Newton discovered gravity
when an apple fell on his head. The logo also included a ribbon with the company name and a Latin
motto.
The second Apple logo, designed by Rob Janoff in 1977, was a rainbow-colored apple with a bite
mark. The bite mark was added to prevent confusion with a cherry or a tomato, and also to create a
pun on the word "byte", which is a unit of digital information. The rainbow colors were chosen to
humanize the company and to reflect the color display of the Apple II computer.
The third Apple logo, introduced in 1998, was a monochrome version of the previous logo. It
was changed to match the design of the iMac G3, which had translucent colored cases. The logo
also adopted different shades of gray, black, white, or chrome depending on the product or the
background.
The current Apple logo, unveiled in 2003, is a metallic version of the previous logo. It has a glossy
and sleek appearance that reflects the company's modern and sophisticated products. The logo also
has a gradient effect that creates a sense of depth and dimension.
The Apple logo is one of the most iconic and recognizable logos in the world. It has become
a symbol of excellence, quality, and elegance in the technology industry. It has also influenced
many other logo designs and inspired many artists and designers.
LOGO 3:

Findings: YouTube

The meaning and history of the YouTube logo are as follows:

You Tube is a video hosting and sharing platform that was founded in 2005 by three former
PayPal employees: Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim. The idea started as a unique dating
site where users had to upload videos of themselves instead of photos. However, the site soon
expanded to host all kinds of content, such as entertainment, education, news, etc. YouTube became
one of the most popular and influential websites in the world, and was acquired by Google in 2006
for $1.65 billion.
The YouTube logo consists of the site's name in a custom font, with the word "Tube" being
placed inside a red rounded rectangle. The logo represents the company's name, which was inspired
by the term "tube", which refers to the cathode ray tube used in old TVs and monitors. The logo also
suggests the idea of watching videos on a screen, as well as the concept of broadcasting and sharing.
The YouTube logo has gone through some changes over the years, but has maintained its
basic design and color scheme. The first logo, designed by co-founder Chad Hurley in 2005, used
the Alternate Gothic typeface and had a slightly different shape and alignment. The second logo,
designed by Rob Janoff in 2007, introduced the custom font and refined the proportions and
spacing. The third logo, introduced in 2013, removed the shadow effect and added a slight gradient.
The current logo, unveiled in 2017, reduced the size of the word "Tube" and added a red play button
icon before the name. The logo also became more adaptable and responsive to different devices and
platforms.
The YouTube logo is one of the most iconic and recognizable logos in the world. It has
become a symbol of creativity, innovation, and entertainment in the online video industry. It has
also influenced many other logo designs and inspired many artists and designers.

MY INSIGTS:
Here is my reflection or take away on how the logos of Mitsubishi, Apple, and YouTube moved me as a
future graphic artist or designer:

The Mitsubishi logo taught me the importance of incorporating the history and identity of the
company into the logo design. The logo reflects the origin and vision of the company, as well as its
core values and culture. The logo also has a simple and elegant appearance that makes it easy to
recognize and remember.
The Apple logo taught me the importance of creating a logo that is innovative, creative, and
simple. The logo represents the company’s name and its products, as well as its style and
personality. The logo also has a distinctive and memorable shape that makes it stand out from other
logos.
The You Tube logo taught me the importance of creating a logo that is adaptable, responsive,
and human. The logo represents the company’s name and its platform, as well as its concept and
purpose. The logo also has a flexible and dynamic design that can fit different devices and
platforms.
These logos (Mitsubishi, Apple, and You Tube) inspired me to create logos that are
meaningful, effective, and attractive. They also challenged me to think of new ways to express and
communicate ideas through visual elements. They showed me how logos can be powerful tools to
create an identity and a message for a company or a brand.

1. Is it necessary for graphic designers to be rooted with culture and history? Why or Why not?

Yes it is necessary because graphic design history can help designers understand the origins,
influences, and trends of their profession, as well as appropriate the work of the past and present
masters. It can also inspire designer to create new and original works that reflect their own style and
vision. It can also take advantage of the cultural signals that colors carry by creating designs that
will reinforce their brands and products.

2. The graphics industry today is one of the emerging markets in the society. Given by the fact
of their high-demand certainly in the commercial and movie industry, what could be done for
the population to balance the competition between professional graphic designers and non-
professional designers? Elaborate.

The graphic design industry today is one of the emerging markets in the society, given by the
fact of their high-demand in the commercial and movie industry. To balance the competition
between professional graphic designers and non-professional designers, the population can do two
things: Emphasize the importance of quality, originality, and ethics in graphic design. Foster
collaboration and cooperation among graphic designers, regardless of their level of expertise and
experience.

3. Photo Analysis and Reaction. Analyze the photo bellow. On the space provided, write your
reaction as to its design. Be conservative.

The design of this image is simple and modern. It is a heart shape with a gradient of pink and
purple colors. The heart is surrounded by blue and green shapes that add depth and dimension to the
image. I think the design is effective in conveying a feeling of love or affection.
My reaction to this design is positive. I like the contrast between the warm and cool colors,
and the simplicity of the shapes. The design is eye-catching and appealing, and it makes me feel
happy and calm. I think the design is suitable for a greeting card, a poster, or a wallpaper.
