PERIODIC PROPERTIES

Experiment # 3

As maps are to travellers, the periodic table is an important guide to chemists and
chemistry students. In the periodic table, the elements are arranged according to increasing
atomic number. As a result of this arrangement, certain patterns in the properties of the
elements became known. Patterns of change across a period and down a group in the periodic
table are called periodic trends.

OBJECTIVES:

• Use graphing techniques to illustrate some periodic properties of elements.

• Interpret the graphs to explain certain periodic properties.
• Explain how a periodic property reflects the electronic configuration of the elements.

MATERIALS/CHEMICAL

• Periodic Table of Elements

• Rule

PROCEDURE

1. Graph the following properties from the values given:

a. Atomic number versus first ionization energy
b. Atomic number versus atomic radius
c. Atomic number versus electronegativity

2. Assign a scale of measurement along each axis of each graph.

3. Mark a dot at point in the graphing paper where the values coincide.

4. Once all the values are plotted. Connect consecutive dots with a solid line.

5. Identify the elements that correspond to the peaks and dips in the graphs.
