which fills each gap (1-5). There are three extra sentences which you do not need to use.

Hi everyone! Cultural misunderstandings often happen when we travel abroad, but what about when our
foreign relatives and friends come to visit us?
Last month, my babushka – my Russian grandma – came to stay. We were all very excited. The day she
was due to arrive, my dad was at work, so I helped my mum get the house ready. 1 We wanted
everything to be perfect when she arrived.

When we finished, however, we both agreed that something was missing.

“Flowers!” said Mum suddenly. “We need some flowers to make the room look cheerful and welcoming. “I
volunteered to buy the flowers. 2 I chose some beautiful yellow tulips – they were so bright, I felt
happy just looking at them. 3 Just in time, too: at that moment, she rang the doorbell.
We kissed each other on the cheek and my grandma gave me a huge hug. Then, I showed her to her
room while Mum was making her a cup of coffee. 4 Her smile disappeared.
“Why are you giving me yellow flowers?” she asked me sadly. “Why aren’t you happy to see your
grandma?”
She looked miserable and I felt terrible. 5 My grandma frowned.
“So these yellow flowers, in England, mean you are happy?”
“Yes, I think so,” I said. “They don’t really mean anything – they just look pretty.”
My grandma smiled. “Ah,” she said. “So we have a misunderstanding. In Russia, yellow flowers mean
sadness and lies!”
It’s interesting to learn about other cultures – they are so different from ours. I certainly learned a lot about
Russian culture while my grandma was staying with us!

A There’s a nice florist’s near our house and I cycled there on my bike.
B I explained that I chose the flowers because I thought they looked bright and happy, like sunshine.
C I wasn’t sure if she liked the flowers or if she was just being polite.
D I was relieved that she wasn’t annoyed about the mistake.
E She looked around the room and smiled, and then she saw the flowers.
F We’re not keen on flowers, but we knew my grandma liked them.
G While Mum was vacuuming the carpet, I was making my grandma’s bed.
H When I got home, I put them in a blue vase on the desk in my grandma’s room.
