Unit 8

8.1> Quadrilaterals and polygons

*Remember:
- The number of sides of a regular polygon is equal to the number of lines of symmetry.
- The number of sides of a regular polygon is equal to the order of rotational symmetry.

Name of regular polygon Number of sides Number of lines of Order of rotational

symmetry Symmetry
Pentagon 5 5 5
Hexagon 6 6 6
Heptagon 7 7 7
Octagon 8 8 8
Nonagon 9 9 9
Decagon 10 10 10

8.2> The Circumference of a circle. π = 3.14

Formula: circumference Formula: perimeter of a semicircle

C=π×d P = (π×d)/2 + d

Where: C is the circumference of the circle Where: P is the Perimeter of the semicircle

d is the diameter of the circle d is the diameter of the circle

Formula: area of a circle

A = π × r2 r
d
Where: A is the Area of the circle

r is the radius of the circle

8.3> 3D Shape.

Front view = Front elevation
Side view = Side elevation
*Remember: use the scale before drawing.

15.2> The area of a parallelogram and a trapezium.

* Remember: the height (h) is always perpendicular to the base (b)

Formula: Area of Parallelogram Formula: Area of Trapezium

A = b×h A = 1/2 × (a + b) × h

Where: b is the Base of the Parallelogram Where: The lengths of its parallel sides are a and b
h is the height of the Parallelogram
h is the height of the Trapezium

15.3> Calculating the volume of triangular prisms.

Formula: Volume of Triangular prism

V = (1/2 × b×h) × L

Where: b is the Base of the Triangle

h is the height of the Triangle

L is the length of the prism
L

Formula: Volume of Cuboid (Rectangle Prism)

V=h×b×L

Where: b is the base of the Cuboid

L is the length of the Cuboid h

15.4> Calculating the surface area of triangular prisms and pyramids.

* To calculate the surface area of the prism, we need to sketch a net of the prism,
then calculate the area of each shape and add them together.

Example:
5 cm

4 cm
8 cm
6 cm
Step 1: Sketch a net Step 2: Work out the surface area
Surface area = Area A + Area B + Area C + Area D + Area E
*( Area B = Area C ; Area D = Area E )
Area A = L × W = 8 × 6 = 48 cm2
D 4 cm
Area B = L × W = 8 × 5 = 40 cm2
A Area D = 1/2 × b × h = 1/2 × 6 × 4 = 12 cm2
6 cm C
B 8 cm → Surface Area = (2 × (Area B)) + (2 × Area D) + (Area A)
= (2 × 40) + (2 × 12) + 48

= 80 + 24 + 48
5 cm E 5 cm
= 152 cm2
