BOARD SUMMARY

CABLES AND CONNECTORS

A cable is one or more wires covered in a plastic covering that connects a computer to apower source
or other devices. Computer peripherals are connected to the system unit by means of cables.
NETWORK CABLES AND CONNECTORS
Network cables are used for interconnecting network devices on a computer network. The most
common type of network cables are the twisted pair, coaxial, Fiberoptic and telephone cable.
TWISTED PAIR CABLE
Twisted pair cable is a form of cabling in which two conductors are twisted together for the purpose of
preventing electromagnetic interference from externalsources there are two types
 Unshielded twisted pair and UTP
 Shielded twisted pair and STP
Coaxial cable
Coaxial cable is a type of copper cable specially built with a metal shield and other components
engineered to block signal interference. A coaxial cable is primarily used by cable TV companies vto
connect their satellite antenna facilities to customers homes and businesses.
Fiber optics
Fiber optics cable is a network cable that contains strands of glass fibers inside an insulated casing.
They are designed for long distance and high performance data networking and telecommunication.
Fiber optics cables transmit data over longer distance and support much of the world's Internet cable
television, band telephone system. It is much thinner and lighter compared to other cables but very
expensive.
Telephone
The telephone cable contains four strands of wire with different colors that aregreen, activating the
ringer. The signal may be phone dialing tone, voice or fax transmission.

Connectors
A connector is the part of a cable that plugs into a port or interface to connect one device to another.

Network Connectors
The types of network connectors are the RJ-45, RJ-11, and T-connector.
RJ-45
This is the standard connector for UTP cables used on computer networks. It
plugs into the ethernet port of a network device such as a computer hub etc.
RJ-11
This is the common connector for telephone cables used for connecting old
analogue telephones to wall sockets.
T-Connectors
A T-Connector is used along coaxial cables on computer networks.

BOARD SUMMARY

COMPUTER CABLES AND CONNECTORS

COMPUTER CABLES

Computer cables connect devices to a computer. There are two main types namely

1. Power cables
2. Data cables
POWER CABLES

A computer power cable is an insulated wire used to connect a computer to a source of power. The
power cable of a laptop usually has a power pack which convert alternating current to direct current

DATA CABLES

Data cables convey data between the computer and peripherals devices like printers, monitors,
scanners, external drives etc. the most common data cables are asfollows

Printer Cables
This is used for connecting a printer to the system unit of a computer. They areof two types- the
parallel cable and the USB cables. The parallel cable connects to theparallel port. A parallel cable
transfers several bits at a time. Modern printers use USBcables.
Universal Serial Bus (USB) Cables

This is very common and the most recent. It is used to connect most peripheralsdevices to any USB port on
the system unit.
Monitor Cable

The monitor cable is used to connect a monitor to the VGA port on the system
unit

Serial Cable

Serial cables are used for serial data transfer. Serial data transfer refers to transmitting data one bit at
a time. Old keyboard, mice and modems are examples of devices that use serial connections.

Computer Connectors
A connector is a part of a cable that plugs into a port in order to establish a physical
connection. There are two types the male and female connector:

1 . Male connectors A male connector has pins for insertion into receptacles.
Examplesof a male connector are the male VGA connector on the monitor cable and
the serial male connector on the system unit.

2. Female connector
A female connector has holes which males connector pins can plug in. Examplesare the female VGA
connector on the system unit and the serial female connector on aserial
