General Instructions :
1) There are 16 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
2) This question paper hastwosections: Section A, and Section B. All the sections are compulsory.
3) Section A contains 10 Short answer questions of 2 mark each, Section B contains5Longquestions of 5 marks
each, and one case study based questions of 5 marks.
4) Use of calculators in not allowed.
Section A (2 mark each)
1.State and prove work energy theorem.
2. Explain why, a horse cannot pull a cart and run in empty space, a cricketer moves his hands backwards
while holding a catch.
3.Consider earth as a solid sphere of uniform mass density and derive an expression for acceleration due
to gravity at depth d from its surface.
4.State second law of motion.Define 1 newton force on the basis of second law of motion.
5.What is escape speed?
6.State triangle law of vector addition and derive their expression for resultant vector.
7.A bus at rest accelerates uniformly to a velocity of 54 kmh-1 in 20 s. How much
distance is travelled by the bus in 20 s?
8. Calculate the work done by a force of 30 N in lifting a load of 2kg to a height of
10m (g = 10ms-²) .
9. A bullet hits a target with a velocity of 10 m/s and penetrates it up to a distance of 5 cm. Find the
deceleration of the bullet in the target.
10.Give two examples of conservative forces.

Section B (5 marks each)

Q.11) (i) Find the expression for the recoil velocity of a gun.
(ii) A person of mass 70 kg stands on a weighing scale in a lift which is moving
(a) upward with uniform acceleration of 5 m s-2 ,
(b) downward with uniform speed 2 m s-1
(c) downward with uniform acceleration of 10 m s-2
Calculate the reading on the scale in each case? (take g = 10 m s-2 )
Q.12) Using parallelogram law of vector addition, show that the resultant R of two vectors A &Binclined at an angle θ
is given by R = √ A² + B² + 2 AB cosθ .
Q.13) A car is moving along a straight highway with speed 126 km h-1 is brought to a stop within a distance of 200 m.

Q.16) Case Study :Friction

Read the following paragraph and answer the questions given below.

1
Whenever a body moves or tends to move over the surface of another body, a force comes into play which acts
parallel to the surface of contact and opposes the relative motion. This opposing force is called friction.
(a) Define static friction.
(b) Define limiting friction.
(c) Define angle of friction. Deduce its relation with coefficient of friction.
