Assignment - 1

Problem 1 : A job production unit has four jobs A, B, C, D which can be manufactured on each of four
machines. The processing cost of each job for each machine is given. How should the jobs be assigned so
as to minimize the processing cost?

Machines
Jobs
P Q R S
A 31 25 33 25
B 25 24 23 21
C 19 21 23 24
D 38 36 34 40
Problem 2 : Solve the following assignment problem for minimization. The costs are given below: find all
the alternatives , if any.

X1 X2 X3 X4 X5
A 15 29 35 20 38
B 21 27 33 17 36
C 17 25 37 15 42
D 14 31 39 21 40
E 19 30 40 19 18
Problem 3: Using the following cost matrix, determine (a) optimal job assignment and (b) the cost of assignments

Job
Machinist
1 2 3 4 5
A 10 3 3 2 8
B 9 7 8 2 7
C 7 5 6 2 4
D 3 5 8 2 4
E 9 10 9 6 10
Problem : 4
A production supervisor is considering how he should assign the four jobs that are to be performed by four of the
workers. He wants to assign the jobs to the workers such that the aggregated time to perform the jobs is least.
Based on previous experience, he has the information on the time taken by the four workers in performing these
jobs

Job
Worker
A B C D
1 45 40 51 67
2 57 42 63 55
3 49 52 48 64
4 41 45 60 55
Problem 5
A solicitor’s firm employs typists on hourly piece- rate basis for their daily work. There are five typists and their
charges and speed are different. According to an earlier understanding, only one job is given to one typist and
the typist is paid for a full hour even when he works for a fraction of an hour. Find the least cost allocation for
the following data:

No. of pages No. of

Typist Rate/hour typed/hour Job pages
A 5 12 P 199
B 6 14 Q 175
C 3 8 R 145
D 4 10 S 298
E 4 11 T 178

Using the given information, first obtain the cost matrix, when different jobs are performed by different typist.
The elements of the matrix are obtained as follows
To illustrate, if typist A is given job P, he would required 199/12 = 16.583 hours hence, be paid for 17 hours @ rs.
5 per hour. This results in a cost of Rs. 85 for this combination.

Job
Typist
P Q R S T
A 85 75 65 125 75
B 90 78 66 132 78
C 75 66 57 114 69
D 80 72 60 120 72
E 76 64 56 112 68
