Assignment Topic: Describe Printer &
it’s types
Department: Economics
What is a Printer?
A printer is a device that accepts text and graphic
output from a computer and transfers it to a paper.
Documents and images can be printed out on a
paper easily by the help of a printer.
It can also be described as a peripheral device that
makes representation of graphics or text on paper.
Types of Printer:
Printers are found in various types, they are
given below:
Dot-Matrix printer:
This is the oldest type of printer still found in the
market.
It prints images and text in tiny dots when the print
head strikes an ink-soaked cloth against the paper
in the required pattern.
Laser Printer:
Laser printer was first made by Xerox. It uses non-
impact photocopier technology where there are no
keys striking the paper. The laser beam draws
images or pictures on a selenium coated drum by
the help of electrical charges. The drum is then
rolled in toner which is a dry powder type of ink
that sticks to the charged image on the drum. The
toner is then transferred to paper and fused to the
paper with heat and pressure.
LED Printer:
LED printers are similar to laser printers but they
use a light emitting diode(LED) rather than a laser
to create images on the print drum or belt. They
have less moving parts which is why they are
considered more efficient than laser printers.
Ink-jet Printers:
Ink-jet printers draw images or text on a paper or
plastic substrates by spraying ink droplets on the
paper in the required
sequence. Usually, an ink-jet printer can create
colour printing
copies with a resolution of 1200-1440 dpi. These
printers were the most common type of printers in
2008.
Solid Ink Printer:
Solid ink printers use a different kind of ink
technology, designed to save space and money on
packaging. This printer melts solid ink (waxy,
resin-based polymer) sticks during the printing
process which can help produce more vibrant
tones. These printers are mostly used for graphics
and large format printing environments which have
cost efficiency and colour vividness as their
priorities.
Multifunction Printers:
Sometimes known as all-in-one printers, multi-
function printers can perform multiple tasks such
as printing, copying, scanning, and faxing tasks.
This simplifies the completion of multiple tasks
within an office or domestic environment and
makes thing easier with no need for more than one
unit.
3-D Printer:
3D printers are the most fascinating kind of
printers. They construct three-dimensional objects
from a digital 3D model. It can be done in a variety
of processes in which material is deposited, joined
or solidified under the computer’s control, with the
material being added together, usually layer after
layer.
A3 Printer:
A3 printers work best for business and domestic
environments that need bigger scale prints as they
print on A3 sheets. Most A3 printers also provide
other options for printing different-sized prints
and usually have multiple input trays that
make things a lot easier. They come in both
laser and ink-jet technology.
