Assignment Set ECC502 Microwave Engineering

1. Draw the cross section of SMA connector and indicate its various parts.

2. Write a short note on dielectric loss tangent.

3. (a)Draw a neat diagram of the cross section of a Type N connector and indicate the parts.
(b) Deduce the input admittance of the following microwave stepped impedance network.

4. Write down the expressions for resistance and shunt conductance per unit length for a
coaxial cable and obtain expressions for conductor loss factor and dielectric loss factor.

5. A substrate of permittivity εr=2.2 has height 0.787 mm. A microstrip line of width 2.5 mm
is realized on this substrate. What will be the effective dielectric constant considering the
Harmmersted corrections?

6. Determine the filter order for each of the following case.

a. Butterworth transfer function with stopband attenuation of LAS = 40 dB at a normalized
frequency Ωs = 2
b. Chebyshev response having stopband attenuation of LAS = 40 dB at a normalized
frequency Ωs =2 with a passband ripple LAr = 0.1 dB

7. Determine the filter order for each of the following case.

a. Butterworth transfer function with stopband attenuation of LAS = 30 dB at a normalized
frequency Ωs = 2.5
b. Chebyshev response having stopband attenuation of LAS = 30 dB at a normalized
frequency Ωs = 2.5 with a passband ripple LAr = 0.1 dB

8. A 1cm by 3cm rectangular air-filled waveguide operates in TE12 mode at a frequency that
is 20% higher than the cut off frequency. Determine: (a) the operating frequency, (b) the
phase and the group velocities.

9. Design a hollow rectangular waveguide to operate in the X-band (8.2 to 12.4 GHz) such
that following conditions are satisfied. Comment on the choice of the wall thickness.
(i) The cutoff frequency for TE10 mode is 20% below 8.2 GHz as well as the cutoff
frequency for the TE20 mode is 5.8% above 12.4 GHz.
(ii) Aspect ratio a/b is 2.25.

10. Design a rectangular hollow waveguide to operate within the frequency range 9.84 GHz
to 15.0 GHz with lower cutoff of TE10 being 20% below the lower frequency bound. The
upper frequency range being 5% below the next higher mode. Comment on the thickness
of the guide

11. The lowpass prototype of a lowpass Butterworth filter is shown below.

Based on this, develop a fourth-order Butterworth bandpass filter prototype centered at 109 rad/s
with a fractional bandwidth of 5%.
(a) Scale the lowpass prototype to have a corner frequency of 10 9 rad/s. Draw the prototype with
element values.
(b) Draw the schematic of the lumped element fourth-order Butterworth bandpass prototype
based on the above lowpass
filter prototype.
(c) Derive the element values of the lumped element bandpass filter prototype.

12. The results of several experiments are plotted on a Smith chart. Each experiment
measured the input reflection coefficient from a low frequency (denoted by a circle)
to a high frequency (denoted by a square) of a one-port. Determine the load that was
measured. The loads that were measured were one of those shown below.

Load Description
(i) An inductor
(ii) A capacitor
(iii) A reactive load at the end of a transmission line
(iv) A resistive load at the end of a transmission line
(v) A parallel connection of an inductor, a resistor, and a capacitor going through
resonance and with a transmission line offset
(vi) A series connection of a resistor and a capacitor going through resonance and
with a transmission line offset
(vii) A series resistor and inductor
(viii) An unknown load and not one of the above

(a) What type of load gives rise to the reflection coefficient indicated by curve A?
(b) What type of load gives rise to the reflection coefficient indicated by curve B?
(c) What type of load gives rise to the reflection coefficient indicated by curve C?
(d) What type of load gives rise to the reflection coefficient indicated by curve D?
(e) What type of load gives rise to the reflection coefficient indicated by curve E?
(f) What type of load gives rise to the reflection coefficient indicated by curve F?
