BACHELOR OF PRODUCTION ENGINEERING EXAMINATION,2023-24
FLUID MECHANICS AND MACHINES
2nd year 1st semester
Any three questions are to be answered.

Full Marks:30 Time: 1 hour

𝑑𝑢
1. (a) A fluid obeying the equation 𝜏 = 𝜏𝑜 + 𝑘 ( )1/2 is held between two parallel plates ‘d’
𝑑𝑦
apart if the stress applied to the top plate is 3𝜏𝑜 , then find the velocity with which top plate
moves.
(b) Explain the expression for capillary fall.
(c) When the pressure on a given mass of liquid is increases from 3 Mpa to 4.5 Mpa. The
density of liquid increases from 500 kg/m3 to 520 kg/m3. Then find the bulk modulus of
liquid over given pressure range. (3+3+4=10)

2. (a) A 30cm diameter pipe conveying water branches in to two pipes of diameters 20cm and
15cm respectively. If the average velocity in the 30cm diameter pipe is 2.5m/s. find the
discharge in this pipe. Also determine the velocity in 15cm pipe if the average velocity in
20cm diameter pipe is 2m/s.
𝒚𝟑
(b) The velocity components in a two –dimensional flow are 𝒖 = + 𝟐𝒙 − 𝒙𝟐 𝒚 and 𝒗 =
𝟑
𝒙𝟑
𝒙𝒚𝟐 − 𝟐𝒚 − . Show that these components represent a possible case of an irrotational
𝟑
flow. What is equipotential line? (5+5=10)

3. A horizontal pipe of diameter 500 mm is suddenly contracted to a diameter of 250 mm. the
pressure intensities in the large and smaller pipe is given as 13.734 N/cm2 and 11.772
N/cm2 respectively. Find the loss of head due to contraction if Cc = 0.62. And also
determine the rate of flow of water. (10)
4. An oil of specific gravity 0.9 and viscosity 0.06 poise is flowing through a pipe of diameter
200 mm at the rate of 60 liters/s. find the head lose due to friction for a 500 m length of
pipe. Find the power required to maintain this flow. (10)
5. A pipeline carrying oil of specific gravity 0.87, changes
in diameter from 200 mm diameter at a position A to 500
mm diameter at a position B which is 4 meters at a higher
level. If the pressures at A and B are 9.81 N/cm2 and
5.886 N/cm2 respectively and the discharge is 200
liters/s. determine the loss of head and direction of flow.
