Introduction to Islamic Architecture.
• Islamic architecture comprises
the architectural styles of
buildings associated with
Islam. It encompasses both
secular and religious styles
from the early history of Islam
to the present day. The Islamic
world encompasses a wide
geographic area historically
ranging from western Africa
and Europe to eastern Asia.
Architectural types :
• The principal Islamic architectural types are: the
Mosque, . the Tomb, the Palace and the Fort.
• Mosque: where muslims pray
• Tomb: for burial
• Palace: A huge building that serves as a home
and hosts administrative functions for the ruler
or an empror
• Fort: a temporary or maybe small structure
created for defense.
• The main architectural
elements of Islamic
architecture are the dome,
arch, and Muqarnas vault.
These forms can be found
throughout buildings of this
style.
• The dome is often one of the
only parts of the exterior of
the building that is
decorated, because it is seen
as very important.
Historical background :
• As Islam started to spread across the world and
muslim warriors started conquering different areas
across the globe. Muslims started to conquer and
settle down in different counties. Which lead to the
diversity and variety in islamic architectural
elements. For example, Early Islamic architecture
was influenced by Roman, Byzantine, Iranian, and
Mesopotamian architecture and all other lands
which the early Muslim conquests conquered in the
seventh and eighth centuries. Further east, it was
also influenced by Chinese and Indian architecture
as Islam spread to South and Southeast Asia.
