Water Surrounding the Earth
Part :- D Q1:-On what factors does the height of a wave depend? Ans:- The height of waves depends on the speed of wind and the duration of wind blowing from a particular direction. Q2:- Define an ocean current. Ans:- The ocean current is the continuous movement of a mass of water in a particular direction. Q3:- How are tides caused? Ans3:- Tides are caused due to the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun. Q4:- Name the important component of the water cycle. Ans4:- Evaporation, condensation and precipitation. Q5:-Name three valuable resources which are found in abundance in the ocean. Ans5:- Mineral oil, manganese, nodules, gold, platinum, nickel, copper and cobalt. Part:- E Q1:- How are tides useful to us? Ans:- 1. High tides are helpful to inland navigation. 2. Tides are used to generate electricity. 3.High tides bring more fish closer to the shore. 4.Tides leaves shells and other sea products to the shore. 5. High tides enable big ships to enter the harbour or sail out of the harbour. Q2:- How are oceans beneficial to us in improving the quality of life? Ans2:- 1.The ocean acts as a medium of transport. 2. The ocean is called a climate regulator. 3. It is the cheapest mode of transport. 4.Some valuable mineral resources are also found in the ocean. 5. Heavy goods are transported by waterways. Q3:- Explain the water cycle with the help of a diagram. Ans3:- Diagram:- (Draw any one diagram) The water that evaporates due to the Sun heat goes into the atmosphere as water vapour. Some of this water vapour condenses to form clouds, and ultimately comes back to earth's surface as precipitation. The cycle of evaporation, condensation and precipitation goes on all the time, and is known as the water cycle. Q4:- Explain three effects of ocean currents. Ans4:- 1. They influence rainfall. 2.They influence the temperature of a place near where they flow. 3.They influence navigation. 4.The confluence of warm and cold current provides ideal conditions for plankton. Q5:- Suggest four ways to help people affected by devastation due to Tsunami. Ans5:- 1.Making relief camps for the affected people. 2. By donating medical facilities. 3. By donating money, clothes and food 4. Making arrangement for boats and other floating objects so that people can be rescued to safer places. 5. By giving emotional support.
