General NaviScan Course

EIVA Software - NaviScan

NaviScan Installation
The recommended sequence in
installation is:
1. WIBU Key (software protection
driver must be installed even
when simulating all instruments)
2. NaviScan 7.6.2.7

Note that re-booting of the computer

must be done between the installation
of NaviScan and of the NaviScan patch
in order for the initial registry settings to
take effect prior to the installation of the
patch:

3. Latest NaviScan Patch (8.2.42)

NaviScan Principle
Off-line/Setup On-Line/Acquisition

The Set-up utility is the tool used to specify the The Naviscan.BIN file, is read by the on-line
external interfaces for the NaviScan system. program prior to entering the actual data-
The configuration is written to a configuration acquisition phase. NaviScan will acquire data and
file, NaviScan.BIN, which must be stored in the visualize information that enables the user to
EIVA/Naviscan/bin folder supervise the system, inspect the quality of
incoming data and make sure that none of the
sensors are dropping out. Data is stored in a
binary, proprietary format (*.SBD)

Standard Windows facilities for file handling. In this case it is

the NaviScan.BIN file that can be created, saved and opened.
The name of the configuration file, to be used online, must
always be NaviScan.BIN
Standard Windows facilities for printing. Prints out the
configuration file shown in the Information Window, in the format
shown on the screen. If the printer-icon is greyed, click on the
Information Window to obtain focus
If more configuration files are being maintained, the recently
loaded part shows the last four files
Exits the NaviScan program. The program will prompt for saving
of the current settings

Choose this entry to add a new sensor, among a list of types

and drivers, to the configuration. Note that the items of the
menu are greyed and cannot be selected, unless the Explorer
Panel has focus
This menu-item facilitates deletion of the item presently
highlighted in the Explorer Panel
NaviScan Setup

Add Sensor
Adding a sensor can be performed in two different ways:
• From the „Properties Panel‟ by right-clicking on an item in the „Instrument Type‟ level
• From the menu item „Equipment - Add sensor‟ as visualised below, from left to right:

For a multibeam echo-

sounder, the mount
angles, the result of a
patch test, must be
specified. They can also
be changed in offline/
postprocessing mode

For each instrument

type, a large variety of
drivers are available
NaviScan Setup

Selecting this menu point opens a dialog where a large variety

of online settings can be specified

Selecting this item opens the configuration file (StnAtlas.ini) in

notepad, where the individual ports for the fansweep MB
(bathymetry) and the sidescan can be seen. The IP address is
set in the normal way using interface setup but can be
overwritten for a specific item in the „StnAtlas.ini‟ file

Activating this item will toggle the „Error trace log‟ on and off. The
traces can be used for debugging. NaviScan will log two files,
„dataproc_trace.log‟ and „naviscan_trace.log‟ associated with
Dataproc and with NaviScan online respectively. They are placed
in the NaviScan bin folder
NaviScan Setup

Online Settings I

This will broadcast the DTM prepared in NaviScan Online to the

Helmsman‟s Display in a user defined cell size. The Port number is 2300
and the IP-address is the address of the NaviPac computer
Data is sent in chunks of # scan, where user can set the „every # scan‟.
For fast update rate but also with higher network load, use each scan (1)
This will send the center depth value on port 5999 and on a serial port
(when enabled) in „NMEA-style‟. The IP address is either the local
address or an address that can be defined in the registry under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\EIVA\NaviScan\NaviScan\DepthIP If
the registry key is not defined the information will be sent on local subnet
broadcast. The information can be sent as absolute depths or as raw
altitude (MBES->Seabed distance) – the choice between these options
must be defined when in online mode (in the „Advanced Settings for
Online Viewing‟ option)
NaviScan Setup

Online Settings II

Export of the binary NED-format for use in connection with online DTM
When an SV-profile is available from SVMon over the network, it will be
loaded as the current SV-profile, if the option is „On‟. Related to Scanfish
This will output the UTC time from the NaviScan computer to a serial
port. For use with Reson 8000 series instruments (that do not accept a
PPS-pulse) in connection with LAN-interface to the MBE
This option will enable a special feature to detect Pipe touchdown
positions in the DTM window when in online mode
Defines the update rate of the related views (DTM) in frames/second
This defines the amount of samples to be displayed in the YT-based
windows in online mode. Large amount of samples means high CPU load
This option is used to help NaviScan to identify which of the two heads of
a dual head EM3002 system is the port head (number 1)
Defines the fixed snippet length for old format 7K sidescan
Minimum and maximum length for new snippet 7K format
NaviScan Setup

Online Settings III

In general terms: do not use this option to overwrite the
beamspacing from Seabat 8000 series echosounders

Enabling this option will generate a position instrument

on the basis of group 102 or 103 attitude data from a
POSMV
A POSMV generates two different attitude output,
termed 102 and 103. NaviScan will use sensor 102 by
default, unless this option is enabled
Convert readings from RDI Doppler Log
This will reverse the heave input from a Seapath
motion sensor
This will reverse the heave input from an Ixsea GC2
motion sensor
This will reverse the heave input from a Ixsea RB
motion sensor

Online Settings IV
The calculation of the displacement is defined here
A choice between three different geoid model methods are
supported: None, EIVA and EGG97. The geoid undulation
value will be used to correct the reference height
Supplementary to the above, it is possible to specify a
manual separation. This fixed value will be subtracted from
the resulting reference height
Pressing this button will convert an ASCII EIVA geoid
file to an EIVA binary geoid file. This file will be used in
online mode, if the „EIVA geoid‟ option has been
chosen

Fansweep Port Setup

The menu-item ‟Advanced – Fansweep Port setup‟ will open a file, ‟StnAtlas.ini‟,
where the individual ports for a Fansweep Multibeam Echosounder with Sidescan
option can be defined. The instrument is configured in the normal way, via the
equipment/interface configuration. Once this is accomplished, the StnAtlas.ini file
must be configured along the following guidelines:
There are 6 types or packages, for which individual ports must be defined:
a. „fs20_lot‟: Standard parameters for echosounder
b. fs20_depth_1 to _8: Bathymetry packages containing depth
c. fs20_angle_1 to _5: Bathymetry packages containing angle
d. fs20_sidescan_1 to _4: Sidescan packages containing sidescan image data
e. fs20_tpe: Total Propagated Error telegram
f. fs20_offset:a port offset will be added to all the port numbers if this line is
present anywhere in the StnAtlas.ini file eg. fs20_offset=25000
g. To change the IP address for the TPE telegram, which seems to be required for
fs20 (or to change the IP address for a specific item in general) just write the IP
address behind the item, separated by a space: fs20_tpe=3159 192.168.1.89

For a more detailed description of these ports and packages, the general Atlas

The „View‟ menu-item shown above, hosts the following entries:

• View Window: If a window is selected from the list given and the window already
exists in the View window, the window is activated. If the window does not exist
the window will be created
• The lower section of the menu is used to show or hide the PaletteBar, the Toolbar
and the Status Bar
NaviScan Online

In general terms, all windows facilitate change of a series of dedicated parameter

settings. This can be done in two ways. One way is to activate the window and to
select menu-item „Option - View settings‟ from the main menu. Alternatively it is
possible to right-click on a window and to select „View setting‟ from the pop-up menu.
A typical configuration of the NaviScan will appear as shown below
NaviScan Online

The Profile window shows the profile of the scan(s). At the top of the view, the number of
poor quality and filtered beams is shown as „Undetected points‟. Further it is possible to
see a visualization of the transducer, if is available in the Y-scale and to superimpose
Pipetracker information onto the view. Below is an example from an ROV-based setup
with a dual-head multi-beam system (one colour for each head). Further the pipetracker
information is shown in the scan in the form of a circle with the correct diameter. At the top
right the legend has been ticked on. It shows the colour of the scan head (green for head
1 and red for head 2). The pipetracker information is visualized in green text in the legend,
with information about instrument and the diameter of the pipe – 440 mm
NaviScan Online

The Waterfall window displays the scans with colour coded depths. Each time a new scan
is logged the window scrolls down one line and draws the new scan from the top. Only the
width of the scans can be modified in the settings.
NaviScan Online

The Sidescan Display window visualizes the Sidescan data. For a dual-head system, both
SideScan 1 and 2 are options. Most recent data is up, older scans gradually scrolls down
like a traditional Sidescan image.
NaviScan Online

The Wiggle Display window displays the echo-sounder data in a pseudo 3D waterfall as
shown below.
A number of functions facilitate modification of the view, such as:
• Change width and depth of view
• Change vertical scale
• Change direction (up/down)
• Change the 3D effect by using the left and right arrows
NaviScan Online

The DTM window displays echo-sounder data in the form of a colour-coded online DTM
as shown below. If Sidescan data is available, then this could be displayed instead of the
depth-information. A number of functions facilitate modification of the view, such as:
• Swap between Sidescan and depth data
• Zoom all/Autocenter
• Show multi-beam and/or Sidescan histograms
• Change model type (average/minimum/span/density/Sidescan)
• Change cell-size and memory usage
• Change frame rate
• Open the 3D window
NaviScan Online

When opened, the 3D DTM-display will always be on top of the other views. A number of
functions facilitate modification of the view, such as:
• Zoom all/Autocenter
• Rotate, move with mouse
• Change scale with mouse wheel
• Change vertical scale with shift-mouse wheel
NaviScan Online

• Change of scale (zoom in/out)
• Change between graphical and alphanumerical view
• Alarm settings
NaviScan Online

This window displays the data from the speed log/doppler log (DVL) as shown below.
The functions facilitated for modification of the view are:
• Change colour of data
• Change scales
• Alarm settings
NaviScan Online

Common for all windows is that alarms can be generated for each sensor. The alarm
parameters can be modified for most sensors. An example of an Alarm window is shown
below, left. Below right the alarm settings from the Alarm window are shown. It contains
one tab for each sensor interfaced to NaviScan. The overall tab, visualized below shows
the interval in ms between checks (must be between 1000 and 30000 ms).

Observe that the Alarm window

can be opened manually.
However, in the event of an
alarm, it will be opened
automatically. This will
influence logging, so in general
terms: no alarm should be
present during logging
NaviScan Online

The Update Rate window shown below cannot be modified by the user. It shows the
number of updates for the relevant sensors within the last second.
In addition the window shows the absolute timestamp (in the right column) in ms from last
hour. The middle column shows the latency in absolute figures, again given in ms.
The Update rate window is a valuable QC-tool that enables the user to evaluate whether
or not he is receiving the amount of data, he is expecting within acceptable
timeframes/latencies.
NaviScan Online

This window displays scan-data as a time-series as shown below. The functions facilitated
for modification of the view are:
• Data from other relevant sensors (pipetracker and bathy sensor in the example below)
can be added and superimposed on the view. It appears that this can give extra online
information about coverage/exposure of the pipe)
• It is possible to define the offset from which the profile should be generated
• Change colour of data
• Change scales
• Alarm settings
NaviScan Online

This window displays the data from the Pipe Tracker as a time-series as shown below .
The main functions for modification of the view are:
• Change colour of data
• Change scales
• Alarm settings
NaviScan Online

The TPE window will display the TPE (Total Propagated Error) information if the Multi-
beam echo-sounder in question can output this (this is the case for StnAtlas Fansweep
sounders).
NaviScan Online

This window displays selected alphanumeric information as shown below. The main
functions for modification of the view are limited to:
• Select information to view in an „Available‟ list
• Change the sequence by which the information is being displayed
NaviScan Online

When opening a Calculated View window, the user is prompted to define the methods to
be applied for the view, as shown below, left. The view will always be based on two
sensors, being added or subtracted from one another. In the figure below, a longitudinal
profile has been chosen, among the items available on the drop-down list, as Sensor 2.
Sensor 1 is the Z-value from a pipetracker and the two values are subtracted from one
another in order to give a visualization of the relative coverage of the pipe. A positive
value of the calculation then indicates that the pipe is covered
NaviScan Online

This will perform an automatic arrangement of all open

windows

When the windows have been arranged as desired, select

this item. The next time NaviScan is started, the windows
will be arranged as they were when the „Save Window
setup‟ option was selected

This shows the list of the windows currently open as well as

which window presently holds focus (ticked). Choose as
new window to change focus
NaviScan Online

The „Options‟ menu-item shown above, is specific to each child window, however,
the bottom section will always be the same. The one visualized here is associated
with a wiggle display, with the top three items directly linked to this type of view.

This will open the logging dialog window:

• Here it is possible to define the logpath, which is the
location for file-storage, excluding the potential
„Julianday folder‟
