supported: None, EIVA and EGG97. The geoid undulation

Pressing this button will convert an ASCII EIVA geoid
file to an EIVA binary geoid file. This file will be used in
online mode, if the „EIVA geoid‟ option has been

The menu-item ‟Advanced – Fansweep Port setup‟ will open a file, ‟StnAtlas.ini‟,
where the individual ports for a Fansweep Multibeam Echosounder with Sidescan
option can be defined. The instrument is configured in the normal way, via the
equipment/interface configuration. Once this is accomplished, the StnAtlas.ini file
must be configured along the following guidelines:
There are 6 types or packages, for which individual ports must be defined:
a. „fs20_lot‟: Standard parameters for echosounder
b. fs20_depth_1 to _8: Bathymetry packages containing depth
c. fs20_angle_1 to _5: Bathymetry packages containing angle
d. fs20_sidescan_1 to _4: Sidescan packages containing sidescan image data
e. fs20_tpe: Total Propagated Error telegram
f. fs20_offset:a port offset will be added to all the port numbers if this line is
present anywhere in the StnAtlas.ini file eg. fs20_offset=25000
g. To change the IP address for the TPE telegram, which seems to be required for
fs20 (or to change the IP address for a specific item in general) just write the IP
address behind the item, separated by a space: fs20_tpe=3159 192.168.1.89

The „NaviScan Tools‟ toolbar is shown above. The toolbar can be disabled
(from the View menu item) and it can be moved to another location. The
toolbar functionalities are also accessible from the main menu of the Setup
program or from the Explorer Panel

The Profile window shows the profile of the scan(s). At the top of the view, the number of
poor quality and filtered beams is shown as „Undetected points‟. Further it is possible to
see a visualization of the transducer, if is available in the Y-scale and to superimpose
Pipetracker information onto the view. Below is an example from an ROV-based setup
with a dual-head multi-beam system (one colour for each head). Further the pipetracker
information is shown in the scan in the form of a circle with the correct diameter. At the top
right the legend has been ticked on. It shows the colour of the scan head (green for head
1 and red for head 2). The pipetracker information is visualized in green text in the legend,
with information about instrument and the diameter of the pipe – 440 mm

The Waterfall window displays the scans with colour coded depths. Each time a new scan
is logged the window scrolls down one line and draws the new scan from the top. Only the
width of the scans can be modified in the settings.

The Sidescan Display window visualizes the Sidescan data. For a dual-head system, both
SideScan 1 and 2 are options. Most recent data is up, older scans gradually scrolls down
like a traditional Sidescan image.

The Wiggle Display window displays the echo-sounder data in a pseudo 3D waterfall as
shown below.
A number of functions facilitate modification of the view, such as:
• Change width and depth of view

The DTM window displays echo-sounder data in the form of a colour-coded online DTM

• Show multi-beam and/or Sidescan histograms
• Change model type (average/minimum/span/density/Sidescan)

Common for all windows is that alarms can be generated for each sensor. The alarm
parameters can be modified for most sensors. An example of an Alarm window is shown
below, left. Below right the alarm settings from the Alarm window are shown. It contains
one tab for each sensor interfaced to NaviScan. The overall tab, visualized below shows
the interval in ms between checks (must be between 1000 and 30000 ms).
The Update Rate window shown below cannot be modified by the user. It shows the
number of updates for the relevant sensors within the last second.
In addition the window shows the absolute timestamp (in the right column) in ms from last
hour. The middle column shows the latency in absolute figures, again given in ms.
The Update rate window is a valuable QC-tool that enables the user to evaluate whether
or not he is receiving the amount of data, he is expecting within acceptable
timeframes/latencies.

This window displays scan-data as a time-series as shown below. The functions facilitated
for modification of the view are:
• Data from other relevant sensors (pipetracker and bathy sensor in the example below)
can be added and superimposed on the view. It appears that this can give extra online
information about coverage/exposure of the pipe)
• It is possible to define the offset from which the profile should be generated
• Change colour of data
• Change scales
• Alarm settings

The TPE window will display the TPE (Total Propagated Error) information if the Multi-
beam echo-sounder in question can output this (this is the case for StnAtlas Fansweep
sounders).

This window displays selected alphanumeric information as shown below. The main
functions for modification of the view are limited to:
• Select information to view in an „Available‟ list
• Change the sequence by which the information is being displayed

When opening a Calculated View window, the user is prompted to define the methods to
be applied for the view, as shown below, left. The view will always be based on two
sensors, being added or subtracted from one another. In the figure below, a longitudinal
profile has been chosen, among the items available on the drop-down list, as Sensor 2.
Sensor 1 is the Z-value from a pipetracker and the two values are subtracted from one
another in order to give a visualization of the relative coverage of the pipe. A positive
value of the calculation then indicates that the pipe is covered

The „Options‟ menu-item shown above, is specific to each child window, however,
the bottom section will always be the same. The one visualized here is associated
with a wiggle display, with the top three items directly linked to this type of view.
This entry is used for online use of sound velocity profile. Note that this is solely for
on-line display of data. The data logged will not be affected by the SV-profile loaded

Opens a dialog containing miscellaneous items. Note that the majority of the items
only have an impact on visualization during logging (see details in the next slide)

use of bathy sensors. The settings will not have effect on the raw data when used for
post-processing in NaviEdit, since it is only active when „ Add bathy in online
calculations‟ option under „Advanced settings‟ is activated. Note that it is possible to
use either the „Use bathy filter‟ or the „Use bathy validation‟ options

The Logging File Information Bar, shown above, displays the name and the path of the current
configuration file. If no logging is taking place, the text „Not logging‟ will be displayed instead as
shown below.

The Palette Bar shows the palette currently used for the depth-related information in the graphical
windows, such as the DTM-window and the Wiggle-display window. The bar can be placed either
to the left, to the right or it can be removed. The Palette bar contains the following information:
• Start and Step: Enter the Start depth and the Step size to determine the ranges for the colours
• Apply and Auto: Press Apply to apply the manually entered setting, press auto to make
NaviScan calculate start- and step-values, based on the present data
• High Contrast, rainbow, faded: Choose one of these predefined palettes
• Custom/browse: Custom will enable the present custom-designed palette. Browse will open a
dialog that will facilitate opening of a predefined palettes in the NaviScan/bin directory
• Palette Colours: Visualizes the present selection of colours with the associated ranges
• Start and End Colours: This item is associated with the faded predefined palette-type
• Wrap around: To be used if the full range in the palette does not comply with that of the data
• Load/Save: This will open a standard dialog for loading and saving of custom palettes

The DataProc
It can be useful, on a regular basis to check that the DataProc
icon is active in the taskbar of Windows. The DataProc utility is
running in the background when NaviScan is in online mode.
The DataProc utility handles the communication to the sensors,
in accordance with the configuration settings, and makes data
available to the NaviScan Online program. This facilitates I/O
operations to be performed without interference from logging of
the data as well as from the various computations and
presentation done by NaviScan Online.
When double-clicking on the DataProc icon, the DataProc
window will open. Here it is possible to see the port numbers of
the ports opened between DataProc and NaviScan Online.
Note that the window cannot be resized, so if it does not display
all ports, it is possible to scroll up and down, by clicking on the
window and using the arrow keys.
