The Open University of Sri Lanka

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Bachelor of Science- Honours in Engineering-Level 4
EEX4331– Circuit Theory and Design
Academic Year 2023/2024
Design Project
Due Date: 30/11/2024

1. Introduction

This project is based on passive network synthesis. The design process starts with a
requirement which will be given to you. Using appropriate circuit theories it will be your
task to provide a circuit which should be able to be built with practical components. The
entire design process should be described in the Design Project Report. (The submitting
procedure is similar to TMA submission). The evaluation will be totally based on the
report.

2. Learning outcomes

After completing this design project, you will be able to,

• Design passive electrical circuits for a given purpose.

• Evaluate the performance of a circuit design in a practical application.

3. Design requirement

A transmission line of an electrical network which carries AC current, has to be

terminated by a load. It is required to maintain the following criteria after the connection
of the load.
I. Frequencies at which the circuit consumes minimum current (zeros) are 100
rad/s,200 rad/s.
II. Frequencies at which the circuit consumes maximum current (poles) are 0 rad/s,
300 rad/s, 400 rad/s.
III. Minimum impedance of the circuit is 100 Ω (Zmin =100 Ω)

4. Design tasks

You have to design a network, using passive electrical components to cater the above
requirement. Follow the procedure given below.
I. Draw a pole-zero diagram and interpret the design requirement on it.
II. Write the driving point admittance function for the proposed system.
III. State the type (RC, RL or LC) of the proposed circuit.
IV. Realize the system using Foster 2nd method. Show all the calculations.
V. Draw the circuit diagram you have realized and indicate connecting points of the
circuit.
VI. Explain the process of applying a scaling factor to the component values of the
realized circuit in order to adjust the components to available values. Provide an
example calculation.
VII. What can the poles and zeros tell us about a system?
VIII. What methods can be used to experimentally determine the poles and zeros of a
physical circuit?

5. Report

The report should contain the following.

1. Cover page. (Same format as TMA cover page)

2. Design requirement description including a diagram.

3. Circuit theories used in the design.

4. Design calculations. (Tasks I to IV)

5. Illustration of the designed work. (Task V)

6. Modifications (if necessary). (Task VI)

7. Understanding the Role of Poles and Zeros in System Behavior (Task VII )

8. Experimental Techniques for Identifying Poles and Zeros in Circuit Analysis (Task
VIII)

9. Instructions to apply the design in the target environment.

10. Use MATLAB or similar software to

Length of the report should not exceed seven A4 size pages.

6. Self-explanatory additional task (Not for evaluation)

Using MATLAB or similar software, expand the admittance function you have written in
design task II as per the Foster 2nd form. You can use the following alternatives for
MATLAB which recognize almost all MATLAB codes.
1. OCTAVE – An open source software
2. OCTAVE online – An online platform to carry out all tasks of OCTAVE.

Hint – Try the code ‘residue’
