Syllabus: Laminar Pipe Flow, Turbulent Pipe Flow

Textbook: F.M. White, Fluid Mechanics (7th ed.), Chapter 6

1. For the shown configuration shown, the fluid is ethyl alcohol at 20°C, and the tanks
are very wide. Find the flow rate which occurs in m3h-1. Is the flow laminar?

2. Let us solve the previous problem in symbolic fashion, using nomenclature provided. All parameters are constant
except the upper tank depth Z(t). Find an expression for the flow rate Q(t) as a function of Z(t).
Set up a differential equation and solve for the time td to drain the upper tank completely. Assume quasi-steady laminar
flow.

3. Two oil tanks are connected by two 9-m-long pipes as shown in the
scheme. Pipe 1 is 5 cm in diameter and is 6m higher than pipe 2. It is
found that the flow rate in pipe 2 is twice as large as the flow in pipe 1.
(a) What is the diameter of pipe 2?
(b) Are both pipe flows laminar?
(c) What is the flow rate in pipe 2 [m3s-1]?
Neglect minor losses.

4. Two reservoirs, which differ in surface elevation by 40m, are connected by 350m of new pipe of diameter 8 cm. If
desired flow rate is at least 130 N/s of water at 20°C, can the pipe material be made of (a) galvanized iron; (b)
commercial steel, or (c) cast iron? Neglect minor losses.
5. SAE 10 oil at 20°C flows through the 4-cm-diameter vertical pipe. →

For the mercury manometer reading h = 42 cm shown, (a) calculate the volume
flow rate in m3 /h and (b) state the direction of flow.

6. Water at 20°C is pumped from a reservoir through a vertical tube 3m long and 1.6mm in diameter. The pump
provides the pressure rise of 75kPa to the flow. Neglect entrance losses.
(a) Calculate the exit velocity. (b) Approximately how high will the exit water jet rise? (c) Verify that the flow is laminar.

7. The friction factor applicable to turbulent flow in a smooth glass pipe is given by 𝑓 = 0.316 ∙ 𝑅𝑒𝑑−0.25. Calculate the
pressure loss per unit length necessary to maintain a flow of 0.02 m 3s-1 of kerosene (specific gravity 0.82, viscosity
1.9×10-3 kg·m-1s-1, in a glass pipe of 8 cm diameter.
If the tube is replaced by a galvanized steel pipe, wall roughness 0.15 mm, calculate the requires diameter of this pipe
to handle this flow with the same pressure gradient.

8. The tank-pipe system is to deliver at least 11 m3h-1 of water at

20°C to the reservoir. What is the maximum roughness height ε
allowable for the pipe?

9. The reservoirs contain water at 20°C. If the pipe is smooth with L = 4500 m
and d = 4 cm, what will the flow rate in m3h-1 be for Δz = 100 m?

10. Find the size of a galvanized iron pipe that is designed to carry water at 10°C over a distance of 200m at 0.1 m3s-1
under a head difference of 10m?
