Introductio
n to the Lab

The research areas include understanding the propagation mechanism of acoustic/elasticity, design/analysis by Analytical Analysis
and various Computer Simulations, and experimental measurement and verification of these. A brief summary of research cases is
listed in Research Field . The materials handled for vibration and wave analysis mainly include common ceramics, metal
materials, anisotropic electronic ceramics, and single crystals, and representative examples include piezoelectric materials such as
PZT, PVDF, and LiTaO3, electrostrictive materials such as PMN and PMNT, and magnetostrictive materials such as Terfenol-D.
The design and analysis tools that can be utilized for this research include finite element analysis software such as ANSYS and
PZFlex, CAD tools such as AutoCAD, Creo, and Solidworks, CAM tools such as Cimatron, and general-purpose software for
various experiments and data analysis such as Matlab, LabView, Mathematica, and Origin. In addition, the main equipment for
experimental research is shown in Lab Equipment .

Next, there is a field that utilizes the above-mentioned basic technologies to design, manufacture, and evaluate the characteristics
of various acoustic/vibration devices (sensors, actuators, transducers). Rough research cases are shown in the Research Field .
This field covers the entire process from device design to prototype production and assembly and final characteristic evaluation
for developing creative ideas into practical use, and our lab has various facilities and equipment to perform such practical
research. Furthermore, there are many cases where new products have been developed and actually commercialized through
industry-academia cooperation with many domestic and foreign companies. The design package required for device development
and manufacturing/testing equipment including CNC machines, measuring microscopes, and optical interferometers are shown in
Lab Equipment .

Through the above studies, the major development cases and application fields achieved in our laboratory so far include various
2D and 3D ultrasonic array sensors for medical imaging diagnosis, ultrasonic sensors for non-destructive testing, piezoelectric
vibration sensors, SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) sensors for various gases and protein/DNA measurement, SAW filters for mobile
phones and pagers, ceramic gyroscopes for camcorders, acoustic transducers for SONAR (SOund Navigation and Ranging), high-
power magnetostrictive vibrators for scale prevention, PMN-PT actuators for artificial middle ears for the hearing impaired,
piezoelectric sensors for smart structures, ultrasonic sensors for automobile rear warnings, ultrasonic motors, ultrasonic
microphones for mobile communication devices, Doppler sensors, parametric array-type ultrasonic speakers, ceramic IF filters,
microwave ceramic antennas, ceramic infrared sensors, piezoelectric pressure sensors, catheters for cardiovascular diagnosis, and
high-sensitivity underwater hydrophones. The outlined application fields are shown in the Research Field .
