The whooping crane is a grand, (1) _________________ waterfowl native only to North America. It
s features are striking, as a mature whooping crane is all white and stands five feet tall with a wingspan of ab
out eight feet. Previously, wild flocks spent the warmer parts of the year in their native habitat of northern Ca
nada, and, around August, they made the 2,500-mile (2) _________________ journey to the gulf coast of Te
xas in the United States. Today, only one flock remains in the wild, and it consists of about one hundred and
fifty to two hundred whooping cranes. Continuing (3) _________________ efforts are attempting to increase
its populations, which face, as they traditionally have, a(n) (4) _________________ battle, by introducing ne

There are two major factors which (5) _________________ the decline of the whooping crane in the early tw

eggs were pillaged from nests, future generations became placed even more in jeopardy. Fortunately, the wh
ooping crane, like other endangered species such as the bald eagle, (9) _________________ became a protec

has moved to the (10) _________________ of attention.

Tourism, holidaymaking and travel are these days more significant social phenomena than most (1) _
___________________ have considered. Tourism is a leisure activity which (2) ____________________ its
opposite, namely regulated and organised work. It is one manifestation of how work and leisure are organise

the defining characteristics of being ‘modern’ and the popular (3) ____________________ of tourism is that
it is organised within particular places and occurs for (4) ____________________ periods of time. Tourist re

Subversive political and social messages are a (1) ____________________ of the art community.
In most modern democratic nations, where free speech is considered an (2) ____________________ rig
ht, such subversive art is easily found. American film is an (3) ____________________ of this. Many
American films are openly critical of American society and its values. Apocalypse Now, a film about the Vie
tnam war, is a (4) ____________________ attack on America’s involvement and conduct in that conflict. In
a more modern setting, African-American film director Spike Lee makes films which depict America as a
racist and (5) ____________________ society. Other arts are filled with examples of subversive art as
well. There are countless paintings and sculptures which openly attack Christianity and other values whic
h are considered to be core aspects of America’s identity. Punk Rock, which originated in England, derided
many of England’s most sacred of social values. Most famously, the 1970s punk band the Sex Pistols freque
ntly sang songs about (6) ____________________ the government, even going so far as to describe the Quee
n of England as subhuman.
Not all subversive art is as (7) ____________________ in its social criticism. Much of subversive ar
t is (8) ____________________ subversive. There are a number of reasons for this. The first is, of course, ec
onomics. An artist who is too open or too vehement in his or her criticism of society may find it hard to find
an audience willing to pay for such art. In some societies there may be a fear of (9 ) _______________
_____, either by the government or by individual society members offended by the artist’s message. Nor are
such fears (10) ____________________. Author Salman Rushdie was forced to go into hiding after he wrote
a book that Muslims took to be critical of the religion. Therefore, the subversive messages in art are often hid
