Modifying an image
When you insert a new image, you may need to modify it to make it more suitable for fitting into the document
Although Writer provides many tools for working with images, for best results 1t ts generally better to use an
image manipulatio n program such as GIMP1, to modify images (for example, to crop, resize, rotate and
change color values) and then insert the result into Writer.

Using the Picture tool bar

When you insert an image or select one already present in the document, the Picture toolbar appears. nus
toolbar can be either floating or docked. Two other toolbars can be opened from thJS one: the Graphic Filter
toolbar, which can be torn off and placed elsewhere on the window and the Color toolbar, which opens as a
separate floating toolbar.

Positioning images within the text

exactly as you would like them.
Position ing of images is controll ed by four settings :
❖ Arrange ment controls how images are stacked upon each other or relative
to the text
❖ Alignme nt refers to the vertical or horizontal placement of a graphic in
relation to the chosen anchon ng
point.
❖ Anchorin g refers to the reference point for the image. This point could be the
page, the frame where
the object is, a paragra ph or even a character.
around the image
❖ Text wrapping refers to the relation of images to surround ing text, which may wrap
as a separat e
on one or both sides, be overprin ted behind or in front of the image or treat the rmage
paragra ph or characte r.
You can access these settings in the following ways:

You can also use the drawing tools to annotate photographs, screen captures or other illustrations produced
by other programs, but this is not recommended because:
♦ You cannot include images in a group with drawing objects, so they may get out of alignment in your
document
♦ If you convert a Writer document to another format, such as HfML, the drawing objects and the graphics
will not remain associated; they are saved separately.

clicking on the lines in the User-defined area
to get exactly what you want.
❖ Line specifies what the border looks like: the style and color. There are a number of different styles and
colors to choose from.
❖ Spacing to contents specifies how much space to leave between the border and the cell contents. Spaces can
be specified to the left, right, above and below. Check Synchronize to have the same spacing all the
way
round.
Shadows always apply to the whole table. A shadow has three components: where 1t is, how thick it is and
what color it is. Set each of these under Shad!YW style on the dialog box
If Merge adjacent line styles is checked, two cells sharing a common border will have theu borders
merged,
rather than being side by side.
To reset everythin g if you are having problems with borders, nght-click in the table and select Table >

Autoform atting tables
You can use Autoform at to make your table formats consistent. You can also create and add your own table
autoforma ts. Here is how:
1. Create a table and manually format it as you wish, including borders, spacing of text from the top and
bottom borders, fonts to be used in the table heading and data cells and background colors.
Note: To use background colors in a new format, color the cells rather than the table. That is, select the cell
or cells you wish to color, select Table> Table Properties > Background (or right-click and choose
Table> lbckgrou.nd), choose a color and specify As: Color, For: Cell.
2. Position the cursor anywhere in the table and then click Table> Autoformat.
3. On the Autoform at dialog box. click Add, give the table format a name in the AddAutoFormat dialog box
and click OK.
4. The newly named autoformat now appears as an available format. Click OK to close the AutoFormat
dialog box.
This technique does not include table and column widths in the table format. To insert a table with predefined
full formatting, save it as AutoText.
