Incubation

- The process of providing essential factors for the

normal development of the embryo until hatching

• Natural incubation
• Broody hen: hen laying on her eggs
• Artificial incubation
• Temperature: 36-38.8 °C Hatching is delayed if
humidity & temperature
• Humidity: 60-70% are low.
• Turning: 3-5 times daily
• Still-air type incubator: eggs lay on their sides
on incubator trays and turning is on their sides.
• Large capacity incubator: eggs are on trays in
butt-up-tip-down positions.

Storage
Eggs are best incubated right after they are laid.

If not, they can be stored for a short period,

usually at 18°C storage temperature.

If stored for 2 weeks, temperature should be

to incubate; 1 hour per
day of storage.
Relative Humidity: 75-88%

Egg Candling
• To test for fertility and viability
• Done by placing the eggs against a 𝑵𝒐. 𝒐𝒇 𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒍𝒆 𝒆𝒈𝒈𝒔

Example:
• Done in three periods:
Eggs set = 100 Eggs fertile = 87
• 4th or 5th day – to remove
infertile eggs

• 13th or 14th day and 18th day – % 𝑭𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 = 𝑥 100 = 𝟖𝟕. 𝟎𝟎%

Egg Transfer

Eggs are transferred to the hatcher trays

after 18 or 19 days:

1. The eggs are laid on their sides to allow

free movement of the chick out of the
shell at hatching.
2. It also assists hygiene; large quantities
of fluff are generated during hatching
and could spread potential
contamination around the hatchery.
